author: Sue Monk Kidd

blurb: Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina - a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna.

review: Another resolution of mine this year was to read the books that have been sat on my shelf unnoticed, and this was the first one that I picked out to read. I picked this book up in a deal for 3 books for £1 and never thought much of it till now. I am so glad I picked this book to start my year off, as it has made me want to read every unnoticed and forgotten book on my shelves.

This book was gorgeous. It was so heartwarming and beautiful, and it was exactly the type of book I needed to read at this moment. Recently I've been falling out of love with reading and seeing it as a chore, but this book reminded me what it feels like to want to read a book.

The characters were all so likeable (except the ones who weren't supposed to), and the plot had so may intricacies and small details that I loved. Overall, it was just a really lovely book that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside by the end.
