book: Kolymsky Heights

author: Lionel Davidson

blurb: A coded message is smuggled out of Russia, a plea for help from a supersecret laboratory deep in the frozen wastes of Siberia. The note is addressed to Johnny Porter, a Canadian Indian of the Gitxsan tribe with a genius for languages and disguises, and reluctantly he is forced to slip across the border on a rescue mission, the consequences of which he little imagines.

review: Confusion. That is what I felt when reading this book. I was confused pretty much the whole way through. There would be times when I thought I was getting to grips with what was happening, but no, something random would come up that we were supposed to automatically understand and I was left confused again.

I was really excited for this book, it has some really great reviews on Goodreads, Philip Pullman calls it the best thriller he has ever read. But I was severely let down. The actual storyline is boring and slow, and the exciting part is brushed over quite quickly and not explored. This book had so much potential to be an amazing thriller but instead was a boring book which could have been marketed as 'Truck Driving in Siberia' and no one would bat an eyelid.
