she fell in love with a soldier
she has always known
every part of her was in love with him
she knew that he would come home.
the reflection of her eyes
staring into the rain-streaked glass panes
she gently closes them
and listens to the sound of running trains.
her mother sighs, looking at her daughter
waiting up at sunrise yet again.
she wants to tell her that it will be okay
but it would only be pretend.
hope courses through the girl's veins
gazing upon the sidewalk
she'll fight tears and she'll fight pain
she still believes that he will come back.
her fingertips still remember the feeling
of his perfect face
and though her shattered heart was healing
only he could put the pieces back in place
she fell in love with a soldier
she has always known
though she was so in love with him
the soldier never came home.
