warnings: mentions of drug use (marijuana)

"Alright, I'm done." Daniel coughed, setting the bowl down and chugging his water. You let out a quiet giggle and he side-eyed you, glaring before breaking out into a smile. "Quit laughing at me and ash that." he said and you scrunched your nose at him. You dumped the ashes into the ashtray on the table and leaned back in your chair. Your parents went out of town for the weekend and left you with the house to yourself, so you called your best friend Daniel and invited him to come hangout. The two of you decided to chill on the deck overlooking your backyard to smoke a little weed and enjoy the cool summer night. "How ya feeling?" you asked him and he sighed, mirroring your actions and leaning back in his chair next to you. "I'm pretty high," he said, "you?" You stared at each other for a second before bursting into laughter, the drugs in your system making the moment much funnier than it actually was. "Whew, I'm definitely high." you said, wiping a tear from your eye as your laughter died down. Daniel smiled lazily at you through his hooded eyelids and admired you, thoughts occupying his mind. You and Daniel have been best friends since you were little kids. You grew up on the same street and went through school side by side for years. He couldn't deny that he's always had a little crush on you; you were very close and went to each other for everything. Up until highschool he didn't think much of it, but when you got your first boyfriend freshman year and an unfamiliar feeling of jealousy came over him he realized that maybe he had real feelings for his best friend. Now he thought about it constantly—his heart would race when you said his name, he'd get butterflies when you'd cuddle together during a movie. More importantly, his heart would break a little every time a boy treated you poorly.

"Does it ever freak you out when you think about space?" he asked and you shrugged. "Eh, a little bit. It's just weird to think about how small Earth is compared to other planets. Like, I don't even know how to comprehend that." you rambled and Daniel shuddered. "Corbyn talks about that shit all the time and it makes me uneasy." he said and you laughed, "You're such a weirdo." Daniel turned his head to look at you, watching you as you stared up at the sky. Even when you weren't high you liked looking up at the stars and he loved how infatuated you were by them. It was nothing special, but it was one of the little things about you that he'd come to adore. "Did that boy ever respond to you?" Daniel asked and you shook your head, "Nope." you replied. "He stood me up and then just never talked to me again." you said and he rolled his eyes. "I'm sorry Y/N." "Don't be, guys are just trash." you said and he scoffed, putting his hand on his chest and pretending to be offended. You cracked a smile and shoved his arm, getting him to smile. "Not you, idiot. You know what I meant." A comfortable silence fell over the both of you and out of nowhere, Daniel started smiling. You knew he was high, but it still caught your attention. "What are you smiling about?" you asked with a smirk and he shook his head, "Nothing." You could see the pink flush on his cheeks in the dim glow of your porch light and decided to press him further. "What about you, D?" you asked and he furrowed his eyebrows, "What about me?" You smiled at him and twirled a strand of hair between your fingers, "You never talk about any girls, not like, seriously anyway." you pointed out. Daniel sighed and put his elbow on the table, supporting his head with his palm to look at you. "There's a girl." he admitted with a nod and you let out a small gasp. "What?! Since when?" you asked excitedly and he shrugged like it was no big deal. Daniel was trying his hardest to keep cool knowing he had no way out of what he just said. "Daniel." you scolded playfully, shoving his knee with yours and he snapped out of his thoughts. "What?" he chuckled and you mocked him, "Tell me about her! I should kick your ass for not telling me sooner." you teased. Daniel let out a long sigh and bit his lip, avoiding eye contact with you as he spoke. "Well, you know her." he started and you scooted your chair closer to him to give him your full attention. "She's the prettiest girl I've ever met, absolutely beautiful. She's so funny and she's constantly laughing, like her smile is infectious and it lights up every room. She gives the best advice and every little thing about her only makes me like her more." he gushed and you couldn't help but smile at how adorable he was. "Like what?" you asked and he started talking with his hands. "Like, she wears this perfume that smells so good and she hates math even though she's good at it and she orders the same flavor of ice cream no matter where she goes." Daniel explained, his adoration for this mystery girl evident in his bright blue—and a little red—eyes. You pouted your lip at him, "Aww, Daniel. You're like, in love with this girl. You have to tell me who she is." Daniel clicked his tongue and waved his hand at you. "Nah, I can't." You scoffed lightly, "Have you at least told her?" He shook his head again and leaned back to look up at the sky. "Nope, can't do that either." "Why not?" you questioned and he still wouldn't look at you. "Because she doesn't feel the same." he insisted and your face fell to annoyance, "That's a shit reason. Give me something else." "Just, because Y/N—" "Because why?" "Because it's you." he said, chewing the inside of his cheek and forcing himself to avoid your gaze. You felt your ears get hot and your palms start to sweat. "Wait, what?" you asked in disbelief. You couldn't tell if your judgement was really that impaired or if he was saying what you thought he was saying. Daniel dropped his head and looked you in the eye, fighting a small smile forming on his lips. "The girl, Y/N. It's you." he said. Instead of reacting happily like a girl who had a secret crush on her best friend would, you shook your head at him and laughed. "Yeah right. You're baked right now." you denied and he shrugged. "So what? Even when I'm sober it's still you." he said. You didn't say anything back but that didn't seem to phase him, on the outside at least. Without thinking you leaned forward and pulled him in by the back of his neck, pressing your lips to his. Even though you caught him by surprise he kissed you back, his hand moving to rest on your hip. You pulled apart and stared at each other for a second, both of your shocked expressions turning into smiles. Those smiles turned into laughter and you were blushing so hard you hid your face in Daniel's shoulder. Daniel's hand ran up and down your back softly as your giggles died down and you lifted your head. Your faces were inches away as you talked, "You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do that." he said quietly. "You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to do it." you admitted and his eyes widened, "Really?" You bit your bottom lip and nodded slightly. "So..you wanna be my girlfriend?" he asked and you nodded again, grabbing one of his hands and lacing your fingers with his. A moment of silence passed before either of you spoke again, both of you just enjoying the moment with each other. "We're still really high aren't we?" Daniel laughed and you laughed with him, playing with the rings on his fingers. "Yeah, we definitely are but it's fine. Now that you're my boyfriend I can tell you that you're hot when you're high." you said and he cocked his head at you with a smirk on his face. "Oh really?" he said. "Mhm, and I really want to kiss you again." you told him. Daniel placed his finger under your chin and pulled you in for another kiss, just as sweet as the first but slower. When you pulled away you couldn't keep the wide grin off your face and he kissed your forehead. "Can we go inside and watch a movie?" you asked and he nodded, standing up and holding his hand out to you. The rest of the night was spent in your bedroom, you and Daniel cuddled up in your bed watching movies and eating tons of snacks. Daniel still got that same feeling of butterflies having you laid up next to him and nuzzled into his side, but this time he knew that tomorrow morning he'd wake up right next to you instead of at home wishing that you were his girl. You rested your head on his chest and he played with your hair, both of you content and so very thankful that your parents had gone out of town.
