lisa nervously grasped the pregnancy kit in between her fingers. her eyes closed and her lips were swollen from her constant biting. she was dreading and looking forward to the result at the same time. she and her husband, jimin, have been trying for a long time to conceive a child, however, try as they might, their efforts never blossomed into pregnancy.
she looked at herself in the mirror and nodded to her reflection. if the results were negative, they could always indulge in another attempt. she ran a hand through her hair in distress and glimpsed at the tiny device that was now positioned on the marble countertop of the bathroom. she immediately diverted her eyes away from it, and instead started to wash her hands.
again, she was stalling.
lalisa was a pessimist at heart, and although her spouse has influenced her to look on the brighter side of things and hope for the best, she just couldn't bring herself to completely rid her mind of fallacies of failure.
she looked at herself in the mirror again and pointed at herself. "if you don't look at it right now, i will slap your forehead."
she shut her eyes, took a deep breath and cracked an eye to peer down at the kit.
"i can't!" she whispered to herself, "fucking hell, i can't do this by myself!"
which is why she decided to recruit the help of one of her best friends, kim jennie. luckily, the older female lived in the same apartment building, meaning she could come in a heartbeat. after calling her, the bathroom door opened in a matter of minutes. the brunette was standing on the threshold, her eyes wide and expecting answers.
"well?" she asked. her snappy tone didn't even conceal her enthusiasm.
lisa fiddled with her pajama shirt. "i didn't even look at it yet."
"why the hell not?!" she whined.
"you look at it for me."
"are you sure?"
"yes," lisa jabbed the pregnancy kit into her hand briskly, "please."
the fringed young woman looked as jennie's expression morphed. the scowl of irritation on her lips had turned into a full blown, gummy grin. she hopped, squealed and ardently wrapped her in a tight embrace.
"oh my gosh, you're pregnant, lis!" she exclaimed once she unclasped herself from the hug, "congratulations, babe!"
"i'm what?"
"you're pregnant! knocked up, got a bun cooking in the oven and whatnot!" jennie shook lisa's shoulders as she spoke.
lisa bent down and glared at the two red lines indicating positive. "holy shit! i'm pregnant!"
...
"are you ready, love?" jimin asked, checking the side mirror view before turning to her.
"all set," she smiled brightly before fastening her seatbelt.
the two of them were on their way to his parent's house, ready to celebrate father's day. there was no big fete or a numerous guests at the amicable looking house, rather it was only a simple lunch consisting of them and her in-laws.
lisa glanced down at her lap and fidgeted with the box containing her results. it was a lovely little box with white lace surrounding the edges, highly inconspicuous too. he didn't even bother to ask why she was regarding it with extreme meticulosity, probably because he was expecting that it was a present for his own father.
"it's a lovely day, isn't it?" jimin spoke after a few moments of silence between them. they were nearing the suburban area of the city, where his parents resided.
"hm," she hummed in agreement, her head pivoting to the side windows to adore the beautiful trees resting near the sidewalks. the sun was emitting a soft glare, making the leaves look golden. "so, what were you up to yesterday?"
"work, the usual," he grinned, "we're producing a new album and we're hoping it'll be out in a few months."
"that's wonderful, love."
"what about you? no comebacks or projects to look forward to?" he asked with an eyebrow raised.
"oh, a handful actually." she winked, "i'm excited but a little sad. i think i'll have to take a leave from work in several months."
"why is that?" he asked with concern and curiosity. surely, she wouldn't take a break without a definite and important reason. after all, she cherished her job. dancing has been her passion since she was a young girl, hence, her decision to migrate to a foreign country and work hard to make her dreams come to manifestation.
the car stopped and lisa shrugged her shoulders. they've arrived at their destination, but even before jimin could remove his seatbelt away from his body, she held his hand. the other moved to grab the box and gingerly deliver it into his palm. "it's for you."
despite the bemused look on his face, he smiled widely and took the lid off. a card was placed in the middle with a beautiful 'happy father's day' penned in the middle. his eyebrows furrowed and his confusion increased. he averted his line of vision to his wife and lisa replied with a cheeky beam. he removed the card from it's place adn blankly stared at the lone plastic gadget inside.
his mouth slowly turned agape as realization began to set in. "you're pregnant?!"
she nodded excitedly. jimin leaned in to place a kiss on her lips. when they separated, he lovingly gazed into her eyes and tucked a lock behind her ear. a wide grin turned his eyes into crescents. "i love you."
"i love you too." she gave him a chaste kiss, "happy father's day."

happy father's day to your dads, the moms who are also dads, your friends who act like dads and everyone you consider a father figure.
