Midoriya didn't have many friends.

Because of his lack of quirk, he had come to terms with the fact he probably wouldn't make many friends. He may have had a friend once, his old habits refusing to let him call the other by anything else but a nickname, but their relationship had become more or less strained throughout the years. So Midoriya didn't have many friends. He would admit that it was lonely, always being given the end of the short stick and the butt of the joke, but he had managed. He still made sure to come to school every day despite what the others might say and refused to stop writing about heroes because some people told him down.

Masami was one of those friends.

He had bumped into her on accident while coming home from an exhausting day of school and really, it was exhausting. He wasn't really sure why he had decided it would be a good idea to head home the same way as Bakugo, the boy literally telling him to die just earlier, but by some unknown force, he had found himself trudging a safe distance always from his old childhood friend. Not that the other boy really seemed to care too much, simply giving the occasional glare in the direction and snide comment. So when he had bumped into her, he knew it hadn't been normal.

She was strange right from the start. Despite her attempts to remain polite towards him, Midoriya knew better. The way her body had tensed, trying so very hard to indulge him as he apologized while her eyes were elsewhere. To some extent, he could see himself in her. She was more willing to speak with him when he pressed her but had kept her guard up the entire time, almost as a protective mechanism. He knew that she probably had something else to do other than talking to him guessing by how uncomfortable she appeared to be, and yet, he had pushed for more. Although her guard had been placed high up, the boy had seen otherwise just for a second when she spoke; fondness had laced her eyes if only for a split-second.

And over time, he had come to learn a lot more about her. She had no trouble admitting she was quirkless but only after he had mentioned it first. She hadn't done so in a way of relating to him but instead opted to use it as a form of comforting which she never seemed to do so directly. She was as much a hero nerd as he was albeit much more reserved about revealing it. She had no trouble catching onto who he was talking about and seemed to at least be somewhat interested in All Might if her choice of action was anything to take. She liked watching fast-paced things such as fighting and seemed to also be quite observant in terms of noticing things. She used intuition and reasoning when it came down to things and seemed to favor realism to optimism by the way she phrased her words. From the way she acted, she seemed to have wanted to make friends with him, easily handing over her phone number, but was defensive about actually initiating it.

To say she was confusing was probably not too far off from the truth.

So after their encounter with the villain, you would think that would be the end of his newfound curiosity. Masami had little reason to hang out with him after everything, especially considering she hadn't even wanted to hang out with him in the first place. Even though she had spent the day with him, she had also been reluctant to allow him to follow her. The only reason she had was because she had been so adamant about apologizing and even then, he was pretty sure she had only done so because she didn't want him to continue apologizing. But she hadn't and instead, even kept talking to him after the situation although it was mostly him starting the conversations. She had even inadvertently introduced him to All Might, something the boy had been immensely surprised about when he realized that the person she had asked him to call was none other than the hero. For some odd reason, their encounter had become the biggest turning point within his life, leading him to his current situation as he stood near the front gate of U.A.

When All Might told him he would be personally training him to become his successor, he never thought it would lead to him taking the U.A entrance exam. Sure, it was what he had been working towards his whole life and having the hero behind him now was all the more gratifying, but with how little time he had to train with his new quirk he couldn't help but worry about how the exam would go. His nerves had yet to go down, the full reality of the situation barely sitting with his stomach. He was more than glad to have been given the chance to make his dream come true but after spending more time with Masami, he couldn't help but want to accomplish it beside her. She had been very avoidant of the subject whenever he brought it up, always quick to deflect if he ever suggested the idea for a second. He wasn't even sure why, seeing how much she seemed to like heroes just as much as him. According to All Might, she had always been this way too, helping out people with little in return yet never considering the idea. Her main reason for never considering it always seemed to be the fact she was quirkless too, something that Midoriya would always relate to even if he had a quirk now (how would she even react to him getting a quirk so late? surely that would cause some problems later if he didn't tell her). So color him surprised when she had texted him late at night saying she would be doing the exam. It had been so last minute, Midoriya wondering why in the world she was up at two in the morning, to begin with, but nevertheless, he waited.
