Cassidy's POV
Everything was hazy when I opened my eyes. I blinked as my vision focused, feeling really tired. I turned my head. Alex was lying by my side, sleeping. There were dark rings around his eyes. He looked exhausted. I reached out, brushing my finger against the sensitive skin beneath his eyes. He snuffled and pressed closer to me.
If Alex was here with me and sleeping. I was either dead or safe. Either way was good. I was too tired to think about what that thought meant. I nestled closer to Alex, smiling when his arms around me tightened.

When I woke up again, Alex was gone and I was alone in bed; which was disappointing. I felt much better and well-rested but also starving. I could eat a horse. I got up and dressed and left the room to find food. The grandfather clock in the hallway told me it was nearly lunch. Well, just in time then. I followed the smell of food to the kitchen.
