Ultra Magnus was never one to show much thought into, well anything but war planning and strategies. But when he was injured in a battle with Megatron, things were different. He saw things in a new light, and at the threat of not making it through the night, realized he really cared about everyone in the base a lot. But the one who was at the front of his mind was the small, extremely quiet human. The one who never spoke up too much when the others would, the one who preferred Ratchet, Optimus, and himself over the younger, louder bots (particularly Smokescreen). The one who showed up every day no matter what and helped in any way that they could. Even though they were so quiet anyone could skip past them without even realizing, Ultra Magnus had a hard time not noticing them. He found it hard to dislike the human race when there were some that could be like you. Plus, you disliked Smokescreen, so you already had something in common. But even with all that, he wasn't too sure why you were the one he thought of first. Well, until you burst in the medical lab, eager to see him awake and recovering. Then he understood.
