A/N- This is a female reader insert, sorry about that! The next one will be gender neutral, I promise! Also this is a modern AU, just because I thought I'd try one.

YOU WERE SHOCKED when your childhood best friend, Fu Yao, confessed to you that he was in love with you.

You hadn't expected anyone to like you in the first place. You weren't an attractive girl by any means. You were short and pudgy, and you were smarter than you were sexy. Your intelligence got you into high levels of classes, and you managed to get into college at sixteen due to your being in all CP (college prep) classes.

Fu Yao, on the other hand, was more sexy than smart. All the girls swooned over him in high school, and when he got into college, his female classmates always asked him out. He only had eyes on one girl, though, and you didn't know it yet, but that girl was you.

After you graduated college and got a job as a lawyer, you got back in touch with Fu Yao. He had become an accountant after years of hard schooling, and his office was conveniently located five minutes away from your office building. After you finished work, you would drive over to his office building, pick him up, and take him out to the many restaurants that were around where you worked and lived.

One night, you had a date scheduled at a fancy Thai restaurant. You got dressed up as best you could in a pale blue wrap dress with clouds embroidered on it. The clouds were a bit childish or so you thought, but you didn't know what Fu Yao liked. Maybe he would love your dress. You could only see.

You drove your car over to his house to pick him up. It always shocked you to see the huge mansion he lived in- you knew accountants made a lot of money, but surely they didn't make enough to pay for that architectural monster that he lived in! He strode out of the wide double doors and you immediately felt your heart flutter.

Fu Yao had let his long hair down, and it was hanging almost down to his waist. He had grown it out a lot since your school days, and you suddenly felt the euphoric, childish urge to pull on it and play with it. Faint memories of you making braids in your hair during recess in elementary school resurfaced, and a small smile played across your face.

In addition to him having his hair down, Fu Yao was wearing a quite expensive looking gray tuxedo and a tie, almost overdressed even for a fancy restaurant like the one you were going to.

He gave you a friendly smile when he got into the car, and instead of sitting in a back seat, as he frequently did, he sat down in the passenger seat right next to you. Again, you felt your heart fluttering, and tried to calm yourself down before starting on the ten minute drive to the Thai place. You didn't want to freak out in the middle of driving and crash due to the utter impossible handsomeness of Fu Yao. That would not be good.

When you got to the Thai place, found your seat, and ordered, you made a great show of pretending to be uninterested in any and everything that Fu Yao was doing. You went as far as taking out your phone and typing on a note, pretending to text one of your nonexistent other friends. You noticed that this seemed to seriously bother Fu Yao, slightly more than it should. You were curious as to why he cared so much about what you did. It wasn't as if he loved you, right?

Wrong.

After the food came, Fu Yao stopped you before you took your first bite. He looked serious, and you wondered if he was angry about you not paying attention to him.

"Y/N, before we eat, I just want to say something. It's been on my mind for many years now, ever since I was a child. I suppose you could call this a confession."

You dropped your fork and looked directly into his eyes. This was serious now. The word confession wiped out all doubt. He was going to tell you something extremely personal, and you wanted to remember everything about this moment.

"Say it," you said tensely.

"I'm in love with you, Y/N L/N. Everything about you, from the way you speak to your intelligent mind, is so beautiful to me. You are so beautiful to me. I've loved you for so many years, but I've been afraid to speak my mind until tonight. Do you love me in the way I love you? Please, say yes!"

You were blown away by this confession. The analytical part of your mind was complimenting his good word choice and his expressions and facial motions during the speech, but the playful, more emotion-tuned part of your mind was screaming and panicking.

How could a man as good looking and elite as Fu Yao like you, a common, unattractive girl? How had he even thought about liking you? You weren't special at all. There were millions of women in the world that were more attractive than you. So why did he pick you?

Because he loves you for who you are, your mind said.

And you agreed with your mind, for one of the first times.

Fu Yao's eyes looked sad, probably because you didn't respond. Did he take that as a rejection? You fervently hoped he didn't.

"I see," he murmured softly, looking down at his pad Thai noodles served with shaved coconut as if it had just told him something he never wanted to hear. To him, you had just told him the worst thing ever, just by keeping silent. "I apologize for my foolishness, and for ruining your night. I'm a fool, and I hope you can forgive me."

"Fu Yao, I'm in love with you," you said bluntly.

That wasn't how you had wanted to confess, but the circumstances made it the most appropriate way, if not the most dramatic or heart-wrenching way. And appropriate was better than those two adjectives sometimes.

His eyes didn't light up instantly, as you had hoped. Instead, they seemed to get more sad. Shocked, you watched as a solitary teardrop dripped slowly down his cheek. Then another one. And another one. Until his entire face was wet with tears.

"Don't lie," he sobbed. "Do you really find me that foolish, that I'll believe you?"

You jumped up from your chair and threw your arms around him. If a verbal confession wouldn't sway him, then you would just have to embrace him. Quickly yet gently, you placed a kiss on his cheek, then on his lips, then pulled away. Your heart was beating fast, and your stomach had butterflies fluttering around in it. You hoped your thoroughly exposing your attraction towards him in a public place would prove that you weren't lying. If not, then you had no clue how you would show him that you actually cared.

His eyes lit up with happiness, and he got up and threw his arms around you, returning the hesitant kisses you had given him with passionate, loving ones.

"You really do love me," he said. "I'm so sorry I ever doubted you!"

"Don't be sorry, my love. Let's just enjoy each other's company tonight. Apologies can come later," you told him.

And that night, you had the time of your life, with a man you had previously thought romantically unreachable to you.
