AS LAN XICHEN'S YOUNGER sister, you were doted on by your older brother. He took care of you and your younger brother Wangji as well as he could, but sometimes he failed. And when he failed, he could never forgive himself.

One of those times was more serious than usual. The three of you were just sitting around the dinner table and eating your food when the door opened and a man dressed in the robes of the Moling Su clan came in. He grabbed you, the one sitting closest to him, and put his sword to your neck.

"Lan Xichen, give me your books with the clan's secrets in them now or your precious meimei is going to suffer!" he said.

Xichen sat there, frozen in shock from seeing you with a sword to your neck and a previous disciple of your clan threatening your life. You, on the other hand, were completely calm, and were ready to go through any pain, even the pain of death, to hold your clan's secrets back from this man.

Wangji, the youngest but the most adept, got up and drew his sword as well. He pointed it directly at the man and was about to charge, but then he stopped when he noticed that the man was using you as a human shield. If he stabbed him, you would die too. So, with a sad sigh, Wangji turned to Xichen and said, "Brother, there's nothing we can do but let her die or concede."

Xichen regained his composure and laid his hands on Liebing, his flute, ready to fight. But then you spoke, and his composure shattered.

"Let me die, brother," you said. "Our secrets are worth more than my life."

"No," Xichen gasped, saddened that any one of his siblings would say such a thing. "Meimei... Y/N, meimei, no!"

You smiled at Xichen as blood dripped down your neck from the sword, which had cut into your skin when you spoke. If you spoke once again, it would slit open your carotid artery, and you would die. You knew this, and you were ready to give up your life for your clan.

"We will never share our secrets with dogs like you," you said.

The sword slit your artery open in an instant, and blood filled your mouth. You choked a seemingly endless amount out before collapsing dead on the ground.

"Meimei!" Xichen howled.

"Jiejie!" Wangji gasped.

The two brothers charged at the Su clan member, who was shocked that his sword had actually killed you. He hadn't expected to actually kill you. From what he had heard, your older brother Xichen was a coward, who would willingly give his secrets over when his siblings' lives were threatened. He hadn't expected you to be so willful in giving over your life. He had just expected that all the Lan clan siblings were as cowardly as Xichen. Evidently that was a foolish expectation to have, and he had been proven wrong.

He was so unfocused that he didn't even feel Lan Wangji's blade going through his chest until he was lying on the ground bleeding out. His last sight was Lan Xichen collapsing to the ground by your body with tears in his eyes. Then he died.

"Meimei! No, no, no! I didn't want this! Meimei!" Xichen wailed, shaking your body as if you were just asleep rather than forever gone.

"Xichen gege, we should check on the library and make sure no valuable books were stolen," Wangji said, being the wise one once again.

Xichen was too invested in sobbing over your body to focus on what his brother said. That was his second mistake. Wangji went to the library on his own, and while looking at the shelves to make sure everything was still there, he got stabbed in the heart by a Su clan servant who had been waiting for him.

When Xichen realized that his brother wasn't with him, he got worried, and raced to look for him. After a few minutes of running, he remembered that Wangji had said he was going  to the library to check on the books. Fear consumed Xichen's heart at this- had his didi been hurt as well? He couldn't live if both his siblings died!

He raced to the library just to see his worst nightmare come to life- Lan Wangji, the Little Jade of Gusu, lying in a pool of his own blood, with a Su clan servant standing triumphantly over him. Blinded by rage and grief, Xichen killed the servant and knocked over most of the  bookshelves while doing it. Then, with his hands bleeding because of splinters from the rough wood of the shelves, he collapsed in the pool of blood by Wangji's side and felt for a pulse. When he felt none, he threw his head up high and cried in grief.

Then he heard Wangji's voice weakly saying, "Gege, you came. I'm sorry... I failed you."

"No! You didn't fail me, Wangji, I failed you. Oh God, how I've failed you!" Xichen wailed.

Seeing his usually stoic brother breaking down in tears hurt Wangji. He lifted a weak hand up to touch Xichen's face, but he took his last breath before he could touch the skin, and his hand fell limply to the ground.

When Xichen saw the dead body of his younger brother, something inside him snapped. Before he knew it, he was holding Bichen, Wangji's sword, to his wrists. He didn't know why, all he knew was that he felt an overwhelming desire to end his own life so that he could join the two of you in heaven.

His trembling hands tried to pull the sword away from his wrists, but his desire for death won, and in one smooth motion, Bichen had cut through his wrists, and the veins in them were pumping out blood like hoses.

As Xichen lost his life, slowly and painfully watching his blood drain from his veins, he thought of you, his precious meimei, who he had failed so badly.

With tears in his eyes, he spoke his last words before dying.

"I'm sorry... meimei."
