I swing my arms next to me as we walk out of the store.  I stop, hearing a ding. "You got a message," I inform him. He turns to me, looking down at my phone in my jacket.

"Yours,"

I scrunch my nose, "I don't think so. I don't have people who reply to my messages. Think you got the wrong fella he-"

I look down at my phone when it dings again.

Oh.

I can't control the smile that enfolds my face, my screen lighting up. Maybe it's another one of those scams or a friend.

I try to keep the smile on my face as I read the contact name. It isn't a scam, and it definitely isn't a friend. It's just mum.

Mum: Come back home.
Mum: They made a fucking mess so they left. Clean it up.

Oh.

"What's wrong?"

"I have to get home," I told him.

"Oh," he mumbles his jaw flexing. "Did I do something?"

My eyes widen and I shake my head, "Of course not! I just need to help my family with something. You didn't do anything wrong, I promise,"

"Do you need me to drop you off?"

I squinted my eyes before nodding, "Yeah, yeah please,"

He nods exhaling a little breath. I wait for him to show me the way to his car but he just stares at me. I wave a hand in front of his face which only made him curse.

"Sorry, shit," he apologises.

"What do you do for living? What occupies you?"

He shrugs, "I help my dad sometimes, I guess."

"With what?"

"Another time, Adelia. Another time,"

I shrug, "Okay."

"Does he own Cookie Man. If so, can I get free things since you know, we're friends," I walk ahead of him, not wanting him to see how wide I'm smiling.

I don't want him to think I have no friends, he'll think I'm a loser. I'm no loser.

"Adelia," I'm being pulled by the back of my jacket. I crash into a hard chest, my face squashed.

Did I just get stepped on?

Laughing in my head, imagine.

I remember when I was at school, there were these really short kids and I always thought I could step on them.

I look up, my chin resting on Zeke's chest. "Yes, Sir?"

He narrows his eyes, "Don't call me that, ma'am." He pauses for a minute, "And yes."
