The day had arrived.
It had been creeping up on us the whole time, but now that we were finally there, it was a little nerve-wracking. And I wasn't even the one who'd be killing Seojun.
At breakfast, everyone seemed tense except for Jinyoung. He was functioning as normal, and I decided to ask him about it.
"I'm not trying to make it obvious, unlike you guys," he whispered back. "Act normal, or people are going to try and ask questions."
"Right." I tried to follow what he said, starting up conversation in our group. We were usually talking at this time, and there was no reason that needed to change.
After breakfast, it was time for a few camp activities. The big one was a hike, during which we fell to the back like we always did.
"You guys are coming to my tent after lights out, right?" Byounggon asked.
Hyunsuk nodded. "Obviously. What are you and Seunghun going to do, Jinyoung?"
"Make as much noise as possible and do a lot of lying."
"Interesting," I replied, watching my footing. "I'm honestly way too nervous. And I'm not even doing anything."
"All you guys have to do is stay in the tent. I know exactly where we're going to find the road, so that'll be easy."
"Is it?" Seunghun asked. "There's more tents out there, too. And I doubt that Seojun will be, well, quiet."
"Cover his mouth, then. Look, we need to get this done quickly and quietly. I don't even want to see the sun rise here."
"Makes sense," Byounggon hummed. He took a few longer strides forwards, as we were falling back more than normal to make sure that the people in front of us didn't hear anything suspicious. We also moved ahead, which brought us into the group of campers again.
The conversation essentially ended there, and we continued the hike in a comfortable silence. I did note, however, that we could see the road that ran along the edge of the campsite from the top of the mountain.
Once we had finished the hike, it was time for our lunch break. All the others had left except for Byounggon, so we just ate while having a bit of small talk.
The rest of the day went by way too quickly, and the next thing we knew, it was lights out and Jinyoung, Hyunsuk, and I were trekking through the darkness with our bags to find Byounggon's tent.
"So, we just stay here?" Byounggon asked once we'd arrived, voice hushed in the night.
"Yes." Jinyoung used the flashlight he had been carrying (which was on the lowest brightness) to find the knife in his bag. He tucked it into his belt, hidden by his cardigan. "Seunghun, you ready?"
"Mentally, no. Physically, I guess?" He grabbed the flashlight, looking back and me, Byounggon, and Hyunsuk. "We'll get you guys as soon as possible." And with that, they left.
Byounggon, Hyunsuk, and I looked at each other in the darkness. "This is it."
A twig snapped outside. Loudly. It was followed by voices.
Hyunsuk nodded. "It really is."
