I woke up bright and early, intending to get my tasks done so that Yonghee, Hyunsuk and I could get a knife after everyone had gathered lunch. I had gotten used to waking up early, a habit I had first started when my parents began wrecking my belongings.
When I started over to the cabins, ignoring the other campers out lying in the sun, one was staring directly at me. Not Seojun. Yang... Jung-something, sitting on the edge of a log.
He locked eyes with me, not hiding the scowl on his face. "Oh, it's you."
"Yes..." I tried to continue past him to the cabins, but he stopped me again.
"What's going on, Byounggon?" He patted the spot beside himself. I didn't even know his whole name yet. "Tell little Jungwonie all about the guys you like."
"I don't know you," I supplied. Really, I'd rather he let me walk away from him.
Jungwon (at least, I hoped that was his name) frowned. "I thought Soobin said you liked being around guys. Nobody likes you for it."
Yeah, I could I turned around. Since when was Soobin ratting out my business everywhere? It didn't matter. I walked towards the Chrysanthemum cabin, looking for Yonghee and Hyunsuk. I could see Soobin and his posse clumped up around someone, and a crane of my neck showed that it was Hyunsuk they had gathered around. I continued on, knowing that involving myself would only serve to harm.
Yonghee was alone in the cabin, folding his clothing into his bag. It made sense, with only one more sleep left for us in the camp. "Hey, Yonghee."
"Hey."
I didn't even know what else to say, but what Jungwon said was bothering me. I couldn't just have my business blared out like that, could I? I wanted to tell someone on my own terms, even if the last time I really had, it resulted in me getting kicked out of my house.
"I'm gay, Yonghee."
Yonghee paused for a moment before resuming his folding. "Oh. Okay."
I nearly sighed in relief. "Some people care." I thought of someone I knew Yonghee liked. "Like Areum."
"I used to like Areum," Yonghee responded. "I'm glad that Sunghoon's obsessed with her now. Takes the weight off my shoulders."
"I'm guessing." I buried my hands into my pockets with a sigh. "Jinyoung also wanted me to tell you that the kitchen is probably open by now. Lunch's well gone, so I'm sure we can get into the kitchen cabin."
"Oh. Now? So we're going now?"
"Well, yeah. Hyunsuk was going to come with us, but he's busy with something else right now." I shrugged. "Anyways, let's just go."
We walked across to the mess hall. Nobody was near the door, so I performed a quick scan before opening the door. The door screamed on it's hinges. "Byounggon..." Yonghee whispered.
"We'll be fine," I said, more to convince myself than Yonghee. We moved towards the kitchen, hidden behind another door that I wasn't sure about the functionality of. Still, we moved, and I opened it to find that it was empty.
Yonghee sighed behind me. I split off to the left, and he went to the right. "Not this one," Yonghee immediately points out.
"Not this, either." I reached for a potato peeler. "This is the closest thing I've found. It's either peel him or grate him to death."
Yonghee laughed as he continued searching, pausing as he lifted up a chef's knife. "Wait, how am I supposed to smuggle this out?"
I walked over to Yonghee, pulling off my sweater. "Here." I placed the knife down in the middle of my sweater, folding it neatly so that it would. I did my best to make it look as though I'd just balled up my sweater.
Yonghee grinned. "Okay, let's get out of here."
We got out of the kitchen as quickly as we could, but the door to the mess hall opened. I didn't know how I was going to explain this, but the person at the door was Hyunsuk.
"Late to the party, Hyunsuk," Yonghee joked.
Hyunsuk only shrugged a bit. "Sorry. Let's go. Seojun's about to start calling everyone in to make s'mores."
I ended up handing off the knife to Jinyoung, who was fully prepared. The only thing left was to execute the plan.
I bit my nails through all the s'mores.
