Chapter 42: An Absent Clown

*2 Months Later*

(Y/n) POV:

I woke up an hour before Zatanna. I couldn't bring myself to wake her up so I just laid there perfectly still. Soon Zatanna woke up and I gently pulled her up onto my chest. I gently kissed her forehead as a soft moan escaped her lips.

(Y/n): "Good morning, Zee."

Zatanna: "Mhmm, morning."

After a few minutes flew by, Zatanna kissed me before pushing herself up and straddling me. Zatanna stretched and groaned before she smiled down at me.

Zatanna: "What are your plans for today?"

(Y/n): "Well, since I'm not the director anymore, I technically don't have to do anything. I do have to help Conner and M'gann move into their new place, I promised I'd help link up the zeta tube and computer systems they want installed in the garage."

Zatanna: "No League missions or anything?"

(Y/n): "Nope. You said you were meeting with Artemis today?"

Zatanna: "Yeah. She's struggling, I'm just going to spend some time with her before she leave for her mothers place."

(Y/n): "At least her mom will be there for her."

I pulled Zatanna back down and she cupped my cheeks while kissing me. A short time later we climbed out of bed. As we made breakfast and got ready for our day. I couldn't help but think that I'm missing something. I got that sinking feeling that I'm forgetting something important. Zatanna had a smug look on her face like she already knew what it was and was waiting for me to figure it out.

(Y/n): "Mind telling me what I'm forgetting."

Zatanna: "Hmm, if only I could teach you to remember."

(Y/n): "That's today?!"

Zatanna: "Yep."

(Y/n): "Alright, it's a good thing I don't have plans. What's this kid's name again?"

Zatanna: "Her name is Mary and she's 17. She joined the Team for about a month before being put on probation two weeks ago."

(Y/n): "Why?"

Zatanna: "She has the same powers as Captain Marvel, only Billy goes home and lives his normal life when he's not doing League work, Mary struggled to give up her power. I'm going to teach her how to use her powers without turning into a god and hopefully show her that there's more ways than one to help people."

(Y/n): "I'm certain you'll make a great teacher."

I couldn't help but look through the file on Mary. Mary Bromfield, her code name was Sergeant Marvel. In the months following Wally's death I stopped paying attention to the Team. I know that M'gann is the only one still on it and that she is the leader of the Team following Kaldur's induction into the Justice League. Kaldur took up the mantle of Aquaman after the previous Aquaman, Arthur Curry, retired to focus on being king of Atlantis.

Conner retired from the superhero life and I helped him buy a house with M'gann in happy harbour. He plans on opening a motorcycle repair shop and sounds incredibly excited to do so.

Dick is still taking a break from the team and doing his solo act when it comes to his superhero duties, he calls sometimes but it's mostly to check up on Artemis. He's become incredibly distant since Wally died.

Barbara is the only one that still talks to Dick regularly. She says he's working to get over it but is far from fine. I told her to call us should she need the help but I'm almost certain she won't. I try to check in with her when she's not coordinating missions for the Team. M'gann tells me she's doing alright but I just feel so distant from everyone.
