CALLISTO AND ROSE walked into the living room, rose twisting her hair nervously over one shoulder while callisto stood behind the sofa, arms crossed over her chest. jackie walked out of the kitchen, offering them a slightly sad smile and a cup of tea each. muttering a thanks, callisto took the drink and sipped on it, seeing mickey typing on jackie's computer at the small table.
"christmas day." jackie said, handing rose her tea as she sat on the arm of the sofa. "any change?"
"he's worse. just one heart beating." rose replied, blowing on her hot drink to cool it.
"...scientists in charge of britain's mission to mars have reestablished contact with the guinevere one space probe. they're expecting the first transmission from the planet surface in the next few minutes." the news reporter on the telly informed the public.
the news then switched to a broadcast where daniel llewellyn, the guinevere project manager, speaking, "yes, we are. we're- we're back in schedule, we've received the signal from guinevere one. the mars landing would seem to be an unqualified success."
"but is it true you completely lost contact early tonight?" a reporter questioned, holding out his microphone.
"yes, we had a bit of a scare. guinevere seemed to fall off the scope, but it- it was just a blip. it only disappeared for a few seconds. she's fine, now, absolutely fine. we- we're getting the first pictures transmitted live any minute now. i better get back to it, thanks." daniel finished and walked away from the camera, clearly in a flustered rush as he waved.
"here we go; pilot fish." mickey spoke up and rose moved to look over his shoulder. "they're scavengers, like the doctor said. harmless, they're tiny but the point is the little fish swim alongside the big fish."
"d'you mean like sharks?" rose asked.
"great, big sharks." mickey answered. "so what the doctor means we've had them, now we get that." he hinted at the animation on the screen which's bowed a shark biting at the screen and swimming off.
"something's coming." callisto stated, rose glancing at her, eyes filled with worry and fear.
"how close?" rose inquired, looking at mickey as the tv started to turn static.
"there's no way of telling, but the pilot fish don't swim far from their daddies." mickey replied.
"so, it's close." rose mused.
"funny sort of rocks." jackie muttered, callisto watching the television behind her, knowing that what was now live was not rocks.
"that's not rocks." rose mumbled, moving away from mickey and forwards to watch the television.
mickey stepped forwards from his seat and jackie stood, too. the alien on screen growled suddenly and rose yelled, jumping back as jackie and mickey did the same. within minutes, the clip was viral as alien life was confirmed to planet earth.
