WITH STRAGGLY HAIR and dirty clothes, callisto questioned whether the man in front of her was really her brother. but he smiled tearfully, cracked lips bleeding, and tears welled in her eyes, too. he looked too thin, too ill. bruises were slowly healing on his flesh and blood was drying on his tattered clothes. dirty hands reached for her, grime caked on his nails thickly.
the doctor stood to the side while callisto stumbled towards her healing brother. io's hands grasped hers, staring up at her and started to chuckle softly before dissolving into sobs. the tears that had welled in callisto's eyes built further and she let them fall easily, a gasped cry coming from her lips.
"i didn't know if you'd hear me." io cried.
callisto knelt before him, tears dripping from her cheeks as she pressed her forehead to her brothers, "i heard you, i heard you."
io wrapped his arm tightly around his older sister and pulled her close, tucking his chin into her shoulder as he sobbed. callisto's hand found the back of his head, brushing over his long hair soothingly. io curled against her and she held him like she had when he was still a child and he first hurt himself.
"i'm so sorry." callisto whispered, repeating the phrase twice more as she kissed his head, squeezing him.
shaky arms held her tighter, io pulling his knees closer to his body, "shut up."
"i didn't come soon enough." callisto ignored him, sitting back on her knees, still clutching him.
"you didn't know." io shot back. she opened her mouth to argue but he cut her off, "you didn't know. just be happy to see me."
"i've never been so happy." callisto promised.
"tell your face." io laughed, coughing harshly when it became too much.
callisto pulled away from the hug and looked him over. io lifted his shirt slightly, revealing a healing gash across his chest. it had been deep and jaggedly cut. bruises marred his green skin around his ribs and callisto could've guessed at least six had been broken in total. she swore under her breath.
"my healing's trying to catch up with it all. it's taking a bit longer." io winced, lowering his shirt again.
callisto swallowed thickly, brushing tears from her cheeks, "i saw you holding the children. and europa and ceph. i'm so sorry."
io sobbed again at the mention of his children, his nephew, his sister and his husband. he held a shaky hand to his lips to try and calm the cries, but the tears didn't stop. calypso and rhea, his little girls, had been slaughtered in front of him. they'd cried and begged for their fathers, tiny fingers reaching out before they fell limp.
the titans threw their remains back in the cell to taunt him. for days, io cradled his girls, desperate for it to be a lie. eventually, he couldn't deny it anymore and even longer after that, his children became bones. yellowing skulls, empty eye sockets and shattered teeth.
