MARTHA HAD SPENT hours worrying whether callisto would ignore her, hate her or straight up stab her through the chest because of her heated words on new earth. however, once she left hers and the doctor's room, the doctor following closely behind, they both wore content expressions. her expression didn't waver when she saw martha so they carried on as normal, watching and speaking excitedly as the doctor flicked switches and slammed hammers and pressed buttons to send the t.a.r.d.i.s to their next destination.
they materialised with the familiar wheezing groans of the beloved ship and martha was first out of the double doors, grinning madly despite the fact she didn't have a clue where they'd ended up.
"where are we?" martha asked, breathless with excitement.
"ah! smell that atlantic breeze!" the doctor exclaimed, pulling callisto closer with a spin that made her roll her eyes but filled her with a swell of happiness. "nice and cold, lovely. martha, have you met my friend?"
the trio turned to look in front/above them and martha let out of laugh of disbelief when she took in the great sight of the statue of liberty.
"is that...? oh, my god, that's the statue of liberty!" martha beamed.
"gateway to the new world. 'give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free'." the doctor quoted.
"that's so brilliant." martha breathed, in awe. "i've always wanted to go to new york. i mean, the real new york, not the new new new new new one."
"well, there's a genuine article, so good they named it twice." the doctor said, starting to walk along the grass, callisto pulled close to his side. "mind you, it was new amsterdam originally. harder to say twice, no wonder it didn't catch on. new amsterdam new amsterdam."
"wonder what year it is." martha smiled and then pointed to the city ahead, "cause look, the empire state building hasn't been finished yet."
"work in progress. still got a couple of floors to go, and if i know my history, that makes the date somewhere around—"
"november 1st 1930." martha interrupted, picking up a newspaper from a bench behind the doctor and callisto.
the doctor didn't know she'd found a newspaper and grew impressed, "you're getting good at this."
"nearly 80 years ago." martha muttered thoughtfully as they noticed she was holding the paper. "it's funny, 'cause you see those old newsreels, all in black and white, like it's so far away, but here we are. it's real! it's now! c'mon, then, you two, where are we going first?"
"i think our detour just got longer." the doctor said, showing the two women the headline of the paper properly.
HOOVERVILLE MYSTERY DEEPENS
martha repeated the headline aloud and then asked, "what's hooverville?"

the doctor, callisto and martha walked through central park while he explained to the pair what hooverville was, "herbert hoover, 31st president of the usa, came to power a year ago. up till then, new york was the boom town, the roaring 20s. and then..."
