DURING THE NIGHT, the doctor and bishop went searching for rose only to find out that she'd been turned into a faceless woman, too. once she'd woken up and saw that callisto was no where in sight, she stormed back into magpie's shop, completely forgetting what had happened inside in a fit of anger and panic and the wire had gotten her face as well.
when morning came and people began to sit down with family and friends for the queen's coronation, the doctor and bishop left the hide out once more, going back down to florizel street. the doctor knocked on the connolly's front door, his face in a mixture of rage and sadness. tommy pulled open the front door.
"tommy, talk to me." the doctor demanded and tommy left his house, closing the front door behind him. "i need to know exactly what happened inside your house."
the front door was yanked back open suddenly, mr. connelly approaching tommy, seething, "what the blazes d'you think you're doing?"
"i wanna help, dad." tommy replied.
"mr. connolly," the doctor began.
"shut your face, you." mr. connolly spat, glaring up at the doctor. "whoever you are. we can handle this ourselves." he turned back to his son. "listen, you little twerp, you're hardly out the blooming cradle, so i don't expect you to understand, but i've got a position to maintain. people 'round here respect me! it matters what people think!"
"is that why you did it, dad?" tommy asked and mr. connolly seemed to retract a little.
"what d'you mean?" mr. connolly questioned, knowing perfectly well what tommy meant. "did what?"
"you ratted on gran. how else would the police know where to look? unless some coward told them." tommy retorted.
"how dare you?" mr. connolly seethed. "you think i fought a war just so a mouthy, little scum like you could call me a coward!?"
"you don't get it, do you? you fought against fascism, remember? people telling you how to live, who you could be friends with, who you could fall in love with. who could live and who had to die! don't you get it? you were fighting so little twerps like me could do what we want, say what we want. now, you've become just like them. you've been informing on everyone, haven't you? even gran. all to protect your precious reputation!"
"eddie, is that true?" rita asked, appearing behind tommy in the doorway, shock and betrayal on her face.
"i did it for us, rita. she was filthy! a filthy, disgusting thing!" eddie exclaimed, looking a little like an overgrown toddler in adults clothes.
"she was my mother." rita said sadly. "all the others you informed on? all the people in our street? our friends?"
"i had to." eddie said, looking around for someone to support him. "i did the right thing."
