THE T.A.R.D.I.S MATERIALISED in cardiff, it's familiar wheezing groan announcing it presence, but no one really batted an eye as they strolled on past the spaceship. the doctor slapped a few buttons on the console, martha grinning as she waited to find out where they were now.

"cardiff!" the doctor yelled happily.

"cardiff?" martha demanded, as if the city offended her.

"ah, but, the thing about cardiff, it's built on a rift in time and space. just like california on the san andreas fault, but the rift bleeds energy. every now and then, i need to open up the engines, soak up the energy, and use it as fuel." the doctor explained, tugging a creaky lever down.

"so it's a pit stop?" martha asked.

"exactly." the doctor nodded. "should only take 20 seconds. the rift's been active."

"wait a minute, they had an earthquake in cardiff a couple of years ago, was that you?" martha asked.

"bit of trouble with the slitheen." the doctor mumbled. "long time ago. lifetimes. i was a different man back then."

"no less smug." callisto spoke up, strolling into the console room with a smile.

"why'd you stick around then, if i'm so bad?" the doctor scoffed.

"i needed a ride, big ears." she joked and martha pulled a face, not understanding her jab like the doctor did.

"is that all i'm good for? ooh, yes! finito, all powered up!" the doctor beamed.

he saw something on the screen and his eyes widened slightly, but he seemed to ignore whatever it was and pulled a lever to dematerialise. callisto eyed him suspiciously over the console, but he smiled reassuringly, or tried to, anyway. the console suddenly erupted in sparks and the ship jolted, sending the trio stumbling and clutching to the console.

"what's that?" martha asked.

the doctor lifted a leg onto the console and read the screen, "we're accelerating into the future. the year one billion. five billion. five trillion! fifty trillion? what!? the year one hundred trillion?! that's impossible!"

"why, what happens then?" martha questioned.

"we... we're going to the end of the universe." he explained, eyebrows furrowed in bewilderment.

they flew through time, but it felt as if something was dragging them back, weighing them down. they finally landed with an odd noise, as if the t.a.r.d.i.s shivered instead. martha looked between the aliens, but they couldn't provide an explanation.

"well, we've landed." the doctor stated the obvious.

"so what's out there?" martha asked.

"i dunno." the doctor confessed.
