MARTHA SAT WATCHING the doctor and callisto flick switches and press buttons and slam tools on the t.a.r.d.i.s console (the third option being the doctor's doing). she couldn't help the feeling of disappointment that settled in her stomach as she prepared to go home. after seeing the past, shakespeare, witch-like creatures and even being chased by queen elizabeth the first, going back to her real life seemed dull.
"just one trip, that's what i said. just one trip. in the t.a.r.d.i.s and then home." the doctor said, scratching the back of his head.
callisto knew he was going to change his mind the moment martha stepped into the t.a.r.d.i.s.
"although... i s'pose we could... stretch the definition." the doctor added and martha started to smile. "take one trip into the past, one into the future. how d'you fancy that?"
martha chuckled and sat forward on the rickety seat in excitement, "no complaints from me."
"how about a different planet?" the doctor suggested.
"can we go to yours?" martha asked, looking at the doctor.
immediately, his smile started to fall and looked towards callisto, who was offering him a loving smile.
"nah, there's plenty of other places." the doctor shot down quickly.
"oh, c'mon, though! i mean, planet of the time lords. that's gotta be worth a look." martha beamed, not sensing the doctor's dislike for the idea. "what's it like?"
"it's beautiful, yeah." the doctor nodded, finding a happy image of his home planet in his mind.
"is it, like, y'know, outer space city? it's all spires and stuff!" martha exclaimed.
"s'pose it is." the doctor muttered uncomfortably.
he wrapped his arms around callisto's waist from behind, leaning his chin on her head as he thought of gallifrey. and with thoughts of gallifrey, came memories of the time war. the screams, the fire, the decision. he would never stop wondering for a second whether he made the right decision. it was done and could never be undone, but the question always remained in his thoughts.
could i have saved gallifrey?
callisto grabbed one of his hands and lifted it, pressing a kiss to his knuckles. she knew what was racing through his mind, because hers was often plagued with similar memories of her planet and the state she left it. how much of a coward she felt and still felt like.
"great big temples and cathedrals?" martha asked.
"yeah." the doctor mumbled.
"lots of planets in the sky?" she continued, standing beside the couple.
the doctor hesitated and squeezed callisto's hand a bit tighter while his eyes became glazed with the memories of the beauty of gallifrey, "the sky's a burnt orange with the citadel enclosed in a mighty, glass dome. shining under the twin suns. beyond that, the mountains go on forever. slopes of deep, red grass, capped with snow."
