THE FOLLOWING DAY, jack and callisto were surprised when guards came to collect them from their chains. they still, obviously, weren't trusted to walk far away from them, the guards keeping close to their sides. a gun was aimed at callisto's head constantly, letting her know that they were clearly more scared of her than they were of jack.
when they arrived in the meeting room, martha's family were already standing in a line, a guard by their side too. francine was frowning numbly as she looked through the floor, clive was staring ahead of him blackly and tish was glaring at the master, who stood at the top of the stairs, lucy about a metre away from him.
there was a bird cage in the far corner of the room, both callisto and jack staring openly at the tiny figure inside. they hadn't seen what had become of the doctor since the master aged him, but they hadn't imagined this. he was very small, probably only a foot tall, maybe less. his skin was pale, but it seemed as if it was browning in some areas, like aged paper. his eyes were huge, not fitting proportionally inside of his bald head. the master had even given him a tiny recreation of his striped brown suit, which he probably thought was a joy to see.
the doctor's thin fingers held the bars of the bird cage, too-big brown eyes meeting callisto's. she tried to offer him a smile, but she knew it would appear more of an angered snarl. she and jack were jolted out of their shock when the guards pulled them back to stand to the side of the room. one guard for jack, two for callisto, both of whom where still pointing their guns at her head, fingers on the triggers, waiting.
the master said nothing, there was no taunt he wanted to provide. minutes later, eyes hard and cold, he made an announcement, "citizens of earth, rejoice!"
the lift doors slid open, drawing attention towards them. two guards stood behind martha, one urging her forwards with a quick shove. she obliged, walking slowly inside of the room. she looked to her parents and her sister, and none of them seemed happy, not after all they'd been through. they were relieved, they loved her, but there was very little joy in their eyes.
martha's gaze moved to jack, his glazed eyes displaying how much he'd missed her, despite not having known her all that long. he was dirty, hair ruffled and poorly cut. his eyes were rimmed with red, but his chain-free hands were casually in his pockets. callisto met martha's gaze with subtle apology written across her dirty face. martha had been promised the stars, and was instead made to hide in fear of being killed, while her family worried about the same fate, not just for her, but for themselves.
martha smiled back softly and offered a gentle nod to her friend. finally, she saw the doctor. he smiled as best as he could behind the bars and martha couldn't help but do the same, despite the change. he was alive, and that was all that mattered.
"you teleport device." the master demanded, brining martha's attention to him. "in case you thought i'd forgotten."
martha sighed, pulled the vortex manipulator out of a pocket on her thigh and threw it up the steps to the master, who caught it easily.
