THROUGH THE DOUBLE doors was what looked to be a large warehouse. people were carrying boxes carefully through the room, a forklift doing multiple at once for them. soldiers walked casually among them, a camouflage-green van driving through. the doctor eyed something at the opposite side of the room in shock.

"that's a jathaa sun glider." he muttered.

"came down to earth off the shetland islands five years ago." the woman replied.

"what, did it crash?" the doctor asked, turning to her, sympathy bleeding into his tone.

"no, we shot it down." she answered, as if doing so was merely a number on her to-do list. "it violated our earth space. then, we stripped it bare. the weapon that destroyed the sycorax on christmas day? that was us. now, if you'd like to come with me."

the doctor shared an appalled look with callisto, who looked back at jackie, who looked equally as disgusted and shocked at the woman's explanation, which was spoken with such pride and happiness.

"the torchwood institute has a moto; 'if it's alien, it's ours'." she continued as they walked through the warehouse. "anything that comes from the sky, we strip it down, and we use it, for the good of the british empire."

"that's not a moto, that's theft." callisto scowled.

"it landed on our planet." she shrugged.

"if people from england land in a spanish airport for their holiday, it doesn't make them property of spain, does it?" callisto shot back and the woman didn't say anything in return, because she didn't have something better than callisto's statement.

"for the good of the what?" jackie asked, confusion evident in her tone.

"the british empire." the woman responded, as if it were obvious.

"there isn't a british empire." jackie stated.

the woman's glossed lips curled into a smirk, "not yet." she spotted a soldier, who was holding something and called him over, "uh, excuse me. now, if you wouldn't mind, d'you recognise this, doctor?"

"that's a particle gun." he said.

"good, isn't it? took us years to get it to work." she smiled down at the weapon, snatching it to her chest when jackie reached to touch it.

"it's the 21st century, you can't have particle guns." the doctor stated.

"we must defend our border again the alien. thank you... sebastian, isn't it?" she asked.

"yes, ma'am." sebastian the soldier answered dutifully.

"thank you, sebastian." she grinned before looking back to the trio as sebastian walked away with the particle gun. "i think it's very important to know everyone by name. torchwood is a very modern organisation. people skills. that's what it's all about these days. i'm a people person."
