AFTER CLOSING THE door between time, the doctor stepped towards reinette, "reinette, you're gonna have to trust me. i need to find out what they're looking for, there's only one way i can do that. it might hurt a bit." he placed his fingertips onto her temples and they closed their eyes.
"fireplace man," reinette breathed, "you are inside my mind."
"oh, dear, reinette. you've had some cowboys in here." the doctor muttered.
"you are in my memories. you walk among them." reinette mused.
"if there's anything you don't want me to see, just imagine a door and close it. i won't look." the doctor promised.
"you walk among the memories of a living soul. do you ever get used to this?" reinette inquired.
"i don't make a habit of it." the doctor replied.
"how can you resist?" reinette asked.
"what age are you?" the doctor questioned.
"so impertinent a question so early in the conversation. how promising." reinette joked.
"not my question, theirs. you're 23 and, for some reason, that means you're not old enough." the doctor mumbled and reinette gasped quietly. "sorry, you might find old memories reawakening. side effect."
"oh, such a lonely childhood." reinette said sadly.
"it'll pass. stay with me." the doctor murmured.
"oh, doctor." reinette started causing callisto's eyebrows to furrow. "so lonely, so very, very alone."
"what d'you mean 'alone'? you've never been alone in your life." the doctor said before realisation dawned on his face. "when did you start calling me 'doctor'?"
"such a lonely little boy. lonely then and lonelier now. how can you bare it?" reinette inquired.
the doctor took his hands away from her head sharply, his eyes hardened in a curious glare, "how did you do that?"
"a door, once opened, may be stepped through in either direction." she replied and the doctor stared at her, shocked and invaded. callisto reached to grab his hand reassuringly and he squeezed her fingers with his own. "oh, doctor. my lonely doctor." reinette looked between the pair. "dance with me."
"i can't." the doctor replied.
"i don't dance." callisto denied.
"dance with me." reinette repeated.
"this is the night you dance with the king." the doctor stated firmly.
"then first i shall make him jealous." reinette smirked.
"i can't." the doctor repeated as callisto shook her head.
"doctor," reinette said, "doctor who? it's more than just a secret, isn't it?"
