Chapter 41

━━─── • ───━━━

Luna

Luna and Amir entered the house through the broken side door. Everyone either heard or saw them arguing, but she wasn't ashamed of it. She had a point to get through to her husband.

A quick look around the room showed that there were burn marks on the floor near the walls. No bodies. They were removed.

She looked sternly at Noah Clark who was tied to a chair with cables.

When she saw Zain's upper body covered in an orange blanket, she continued walking. Selena was sitting beside him, crying.

"Zain loved orange. It stood for courage, success, confidence, and friendliness," she said while she struggled to breathe. Zander stood over Noah with a knife to his neck. "He was amazing. He'll be missed."

Zander snarled, then stared daggers heavily at the agent, gently cutting a small portion of his skin. "That's for killing my brother, and I'm not through with you yet."

While she waited, Luna's throat hurt. The agent's lips were thin, and his forehead was wrinkled. He looked like he was married and had children, but Noah gave her a sharp look. He was a person that probably enjoyed gardening on the weekends and talked to his neighbors about plants and fertilizer before the war began.

He agreed to kill and capture her. Did not think or act. He accepted this assignment.

Luna huffed loudly and shook off her nerves. "I'll break your arm if you lie. Tell me why you tried to activate me."

"Dayum . . ." came from behind her. It sounded like Greer.

When Noah looked around the room, she could feel Amir coming closer. Luna didn't know how she knew that because his anger had clouded his aura. "Someone hired my team. I don't know who—"

"I think you should tell us the truth." Amir stared at him. "If not, I'd like to break 205 more bones and fry a lot of organs with a single touch."

Luna's eyebrows furrowed because she hated this agent.

Amir smiled. "Would you care to try answering that question again?"

"I don't want him to answer." After he walked into the living room, Zander threw a burned pillow on the floor. "I want to let out some of my anger."

Luna kneeled. "I think you should answer our questions."

Noah's chest rose and fell. "We're not employed by the government. Or BARDA. We belong to Legion."

Zander sighed. "I don't think you take us seriously." He shifted with a smile that was just as scary as Amir's. "We should show you how serious we are."

"I'm not making this up!" Noah swayed. "We are—our league was formed—"

"In the ninth century? Wait." Selena rose, her nose wrinkled. "In three New Testament versions of Jesus' exorcism of the Gerasene demoniac, Legion was used to describe a variety of demons. Do you want us to cast out your demons?"

The room was so quiet that you could hear a fly fart.

"What?" She wiped her face. "I'm not religious, but I know that."
