I groaned in pain as I heaved up whatever was left in my stomach into the toilet. I flushed the toilet before I doubled over and pressed my forehead to the cool bathroom floor. The infected skin on my ribs seemed to pulse under my touch. I reached for my stele to draw another healing rune, but I knew it would only do so much. I had been on a mission a few days ago by myself tracking down a demon I had never heard of. I was doing fine before the little bastard decided to swipe at me, cutting the skin over my ribs. That hurt like hell. I did manage to kill it, and when I did, I passed out for several hours in that dirty and abandoned alleyway before going back to the Institute. Alec was about to freak out when I had finally arrived and demanded to know what had happened and what had taken so long. I gave the flimsiest excuse ever by saying I had just wanted to take a walk through the park and lost track of time. I wasn't going to tell him what actually happened because then I would have to admit to my own incompetence and he would make me stay in the Institute for who knows how long.

As I sat there thinking on these events, I heard a knock on the bathroom door followed by Alec's voice calling my name. I cursed myself that I had stayed here too long. I hauled myself up and opened the door to be greeted by the sight of my boyfriend's chest. Dude is too freaking tall. "Did you just get back from training with Jace?" I asked, trying to pretend like nothing had happened. Alec nodded and sighed. "Lets just say that he's not much of a morning person." I laughed. "Also, I wanted to let you know that we've got a mission briefing in an hour, so I'm going to shower and you should probably get ready.""Thanks," I said as I moved aside to let Alec into the bathroom before turning to the dresser to get ready.

An hour later, we were suited up and headed towards the front doors of the Institute to meet up with Isabelle. She was already waiting there, all suited up as well, her whip wrapped around her arm. "Are we ready?" She asked. Alec merely opened the doors and walked out, leaving Izzy to glare after him. "Well I'm ready." I said, and Izzy laughed. We both had to practically run to keep up with Alec's long strides and listen to him talking at the same time about what we were up against. When he had finally stopped talking, I said "Alec, I know you're in a hurry, but if you don't slow down even a little bit, I'm going to be too tired from running  after you to actually fight this thing." A slight smirk made its way onto his face as he looked at me. "Well some of us aren't as short as you." Before I could open my mouth for a snarky remark, he had picked me up and placed me on his back without breaking pace. I clung to his neck as Izzy started laughing. "Thank you" I whispered in his ear before pressing a light kiss to his cheek. His face turned slightly red as he brushed it aside by saying "yeah, yeah, yeah, you're welcome."

When we reached the abandoned building, I got off of his back and we made our way inside. Alec had his bow drawn, Izzy's whip was out, and I had my throwing knives at the ready. It was dead silent as we worked our way through the building, everyone's senses on high alert. Then we heard it. A low growling noise that made us all freeze. Next thing I knew, I was pinned to the ground. The demon we had been after had been hiding in the ceiling, waiting to pounce. And it had landed on me. It's paws, and most of its body weight, was pressing down on my torso and my injuries. I wanted to scream in that moment from how much it hurt, but it came out as more of a yelp. The edges around my vision turned dark and I heard Alec shout my name. I felt the demon thrown off of me and I had enough sense to get up and crawl backwards towards a wall. "Y/n, are you okay?" Izzy called out as her whip made contact with the demon's arm. "Yeah, I'm fine" I managed to croak out. I quickly drew another healing rune before I forced myself up and towards the fight. I managed to slash it a few times under its arms and on its underbelly before Alec landed the final blow. It collapsed and began to turn into a puddle of black liquid, which is how we left it as we exited the building.

In the daylight we could assess our injuries better. "Y/n, are you sure you're okay? You look extremely pale." I did not feel okay, in fact my ribs felt like they were on fire, but I merely nodded my head and said "Yeah, I'm sure. I just had the wind knocked out of me." Alec raised his hand and held it against my cheek as he stared at me for a moment before he said "ok." He pressed a kiss to my forehead before turning to see how Izzy was. She only had a few scrapes and bruises. The walk back to the Institute was a little slow, so Alec put me on his back again. When we got back, I went straight to our room and Alec went to report to his mother. I grabbed a change of clothes and headed to the bathroom to shower. As the water warmed up, I peeled off my clothes. The cuts on my torso seemed even more inflamed and were leaking some weird fluid. Fantastic. As I showered, the water burned the injuries, so I tried to minimize my time in the water. I finished, bandaged my torso, changed, and went straight to bed.

I fell asleep rather quickly and slept straight through dinner, not that I minded because I wasn't feeling hungry. I woke up around 1 in the morning feeling like my skin was on fire and I was about to throw up. As quietly as I could because Alec was sleeping next to me, I got out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. I threw up several times. I could feel tears sliding down my face and every breath I took was short and shaky. The pain coming from the injuries was intense, more than it has been, and I clung to the side of the sink with my hands shaking. I felt so incredibly weak and I threw up again as the bathroom door opened.

"Y/n!" In a second I had collapsed in Alec's arms on the floor and was being held by him. I managed to lift my head to look at him and saw a very concerned look on his face. "Y/n, you're burning up and you look terrible. What's going on?""Ribs" was all I could manage to gasp out before I was squeezing his hand tightly. Alec lifted my shirt slightly and saw the bandages. He removed them and I heard him suck in a breath. "By the angel, Y/n this is not okay. I'm getting help." I felt myself being picked up, one arm under my knees, the other behind my back, and my head laid against his chest. Alec hurried down the dark Institute halls, every step made me whimper in pain. As he hurried, I passed out.

When I came to, I was in one of the beds in the infirmary. Alec was talking to Magnus near the door to the room when he noticed I was awake. He said one more thing and then Magnus left as Alec made his way to my side. "What happened? How are you feeling right now?" He anxiously asked as he took my hand in his. "I'm feeling better now, pretty achey though." He nodded his head in understanding and then asked me again what had happened. I sighed before I explained everything to him. He was silent when I finished. "Alec, I'm so sorry." I said softly. He looked at me a moment before he carefully pulled me into his arms and held me. "You're so stubborn, Y/n. Sometimes it can be a good thing, but sometimes it's okay to say you need help. I'm not going to let you suffer like this because you're too stubborn.""I know, Alec, and I'm sorry." I said as I buried my face in his shoulder. "You know this means that you have to stay here for two weeks, right?" I groaned but I knew that's what happens, so I nodded.

The next two weeks I stayed in bed. I was grumpy, but I had an incredibly caring boyfriend to cater to my every need.
