Never In Love

You and I were not in love
We were lonely
We were hopeless
We were filling holes within ourselves with each other like plaster
Until we finally chipped away every inch of us
Death by helping
Death by healing
We thought we were healing each other
Holding each other together
Yet jolding on far too tight
A snake coiling around the others neck until cheeks turned blue
Pretty, venomous words spit from split tongues
One side of love
One side of hate
Okay, maybe not hate
But something darker
We needed each other
That was the problem
We were so dependent on one another that the thought of cutting the string felt like a physical death
Manipulating each other
Trying to morph the other into what we wanted
Fight after
fight after
fight after
fight after
fight
We went around swinging chisels at the other
Maybe then we can be what the other wants
Maybe then we can feel loved
Maybe then we can be happy
Maybe then
Maybe then
Maybe then
But no amount of carving could have ever been enough to fix us
It was never love
It was an addiction
