The room buzzes with the chaotic energy of our recent battle and the gravity of our current situation. I can feel the tension radiating from everyone as we scatter to settle in. I catch Five's eye and nod toward the hallway. He follows me without a word, knowing that we need a moment alone.
We find a quiet corner near an old, creaky window that overlooks the city. The evening light casts long shadows, and the noise from the street below is a comforting hum compared to the earlier chaos.
"Are you okay?" I ask, my voice soft, trying to keep the worry from showing too much.
Five looks at me, his sharp eyes softening slightly. "I'm as okay as I can be, given the circumstances."
I step closer, reaching out to touch his hand. The connection is immediate, grounding both of us in the present. "I know we've been through a lot, but we'll get through this"
He squeezes my hand, a rare gesture of vulnerability. "It's just... this timeline is a mess. We're dealing with an entirely new set of problems, and I'm worried about how it will affect us."
I nod, understanding his concern. "We've handled worse"
He chuckles, a brief but genuine sound. "I guess you're right. Still, I can't shake the feeling that something big is coming."
"Whatever it is, we'll kick its ass," I say firmly.
He looks at me, his expression softening even more. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Good thing you don't have to find out," I reply with a smile.
We stand there for a moment, simply enjoying the quiet and each other's presence. It's a rare moment of peace, and I can see the weight lifting from his shoulders, even if just a little.
"We should get back," Five says, though he makes no move to leave.
"Yeah," I agree, but I also stay where I am. "But let's take another minute. Just us."
He nods, and we stand by the window, watching the city as the sun sets.
After a few more moments, Five speaks again. "We should get cleaned up"
I nod in agreement, "A shower and some clean clothes sound heavenly right now"
Time Skip
Walking into the lobby, I spot Luther, Diego and Klaus. Crowded around a small table.
"You should try chewing. You might actually taste the food," Klaus says lazily, glancing at Luther.
"I haven't eaten in days," Luther retorts, shoveling more food into his mouth.
The light jazz playing in the background adds a surreal, almost peaceful ambiance to our tense meal. Luther looks up at Five.
"What's wrong? You look happy,"
Five shrugs, "I am plenty happy. Had a nap and a shvitz. What does a man need?"
"Brothers who don't eat like barn animals?" Klaus suggests.
Five rolls his eyes and sits down. "So I've been thinking through our little timeline snafu, and I'm pleased to report that in my professional, expert opinion, we are totally in the clear."
"Awesome!" Klaus exclaims.
"Huh! Great," Luther adds. "So everything's totally fine?"
Five grabs a pair of chopsticks "More or less. I mean, there is one... small thing. It's nothing we can't manage."
Everyone looks at him in anticipation. "So spit it out, Boomer!" Diego demands.
"Fine, Diego, it's like this. Dad didn't adopt us as babies, but those babies still existed here."
"Aww!" Klaus says, in mock sentimentality.
"We just grew up in different places with different people," Five continues.
"So?" Diego asks.
"So where are they now?" I interject.
"Odds are, we each have identical versions of ourselves walking around out there, living completely different lives," Five continues.
Luther gasps. "Our doppelgängers!" He exclaims, his eyes wide.
"That's a made-up word," Kalus scoffs.
"No, no! I learned all about this in Texas. Tell him about the paranoid psychosis, Five,"
Diego looks at us in alarm. "Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa! I thought you said this wasn't a problem."
"Okay, yes, technically, if you're near your doppel for long, you'll go insane," I tell him nonchalantly.
"So, if you see your other self--" Five begins.
"Kill them," Diego says bluntly.
"Sleep with them," Klaus suggests, earning a disgusted look from everyone.
"Avoid them," Five interjects, glaring at Klaus.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Luther says in concern.
"Oh come on. As if you wouldn't climb Luther Mountain," Klaus retorts.
"Ew, Klaus" I look at him in disgust, Klaus just shrugs.
"Wait. How are we supposed to guarantee we don't cross paths with ourselves?" Diego asks.
"Easy. We're the Benetton ad of superheroes, born all around the world until Dad brought us here, which he no longer did. Doppels probably aren't even in the same time zone as us," Five reassures.
"That's true," Luther says, trying to sound convinced.
"Would you pass the moo shu?" Five asks him.
A thudding sound grabs my attention, I lean over to see one of Diego's knives embedded into the back of his chair. Diego turns around.
Glancing over to the back of the room, my eyes widen in surprise as I spot a blonde Lila, standing in the lobby.
Klaus picks at his food, looking contemplative. "I don't know. Doesn't it seem kind of rude that Dad unadopting us didn't change anything? I'm offended."
Five sighs, "I never said that, Klaus"
Diego sets his food down, standing up from the table. "Hold up. I'll be right back."
"Diego!" I whisper shout. He shakes his head at me, "It's fine Sparky, stay here" With that, he turns and runs towards the direction of Lila.
Whatever, I guess I'll just have to deal with her later. Hopefully Diego doesn't get himself killed in the meantime.
With a sigh of agitation, I turn back to Klaus. "How are we gonna know where it changed?" He asks.
"That's the million-dollar question, isn't it?" I reply somewhat sarcastically.
Luther shakes his head. "This just keeps getting better and better."
Five put down the box of food, "Look it doesn't matter okay?"
"The point is, we did it. We saved the world. We stopped the apocalypse. And made it home safe in time for dinner. So whatever Dad changed, whatever timeline we're in now..."
"We can handle it" He picks up his drink.
"We won" Luther repeats with a smile, he raises his beer.
"We won" I parrot, me and Klaus both raise our drinks as well.
"It's finally over"
