Surprise, surprise. Another review? Yeah, you guessed it. Book club.

Author: KeriHalfacre

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

No. chapters read: 9

First impression: Yay, dead girl! Dead people make everything a lot more interesting.

Cover: No. Just no. It looks like a freaking classic cover. Because back then, people sucked at making covers. This picture says nothing about your story. It's not even mildly interesting. Based on the cover alone, my first thought about your story is BORING!

Cover rating: Nope

Blurb: That first sentence is really strong. The rest of the blurb is also good. It gets me interested. I want to know what Natalie wrote in her diary and all the secrets the others are hiding. And I'm so happy you update every Friday! Actually, no, I don't care. But I've heard it's good to let people know. Maybe separate it a bit better.

Blurb rating: Good

Let's get it on!

Second impression: I love drama! Yay for drama!

Actual review (drum roll please):

Language/writing: Ah, God. I wish I could say good things about you. It's mostly okay. But then you have odd unfinished sentences, crappy dialogue punctuation and sometimes phrase your words in a way that makes me scratch my head.

Though pretty good, it's mindboggling. And it makes it hard to understand what's going on. Which is really bad since the plot itself is not easy to understand.

Language rating: Kinda all over the place

Plot: Why. don't. they. read the whole fucking diary? Really now? I get why Jane was initially skeptical and waited it out. But after the others came into the picture, I find it almost impossible to believe that each of them only read their designated part. They pass it around like it's a hot potato, go in all these freaky places and don't explain anything to each other.

You know, if some guy called me up to tell me to break into a graveyard at night, I'd say 'fuck you, I'm sleeping'. Fuck you and your stupid diary. I have no secrets. You can all take your secrets and shove them up your asses.

I guess what I'm trying to say through crude, hopefully amusing language, is that I don't understand why Jane is going along with this shit. Let's say for a moment that the others all have some secret mysterious reasons. Jane does not. End of story.

I am slightly curious to find out what's going on, but the diary entries themselves are just as confusing as the rest of the plot and I'm secretly scared I won't understand a damn thing.

Plot rating: has potential

Characters:

Jane: I get that she might have PTSS (or PTSD or whatever), but she's one of the most apathetic protagonists I have seen. And I can't judge if that's just how she is or it's Natalie's death that affected her because a. I haven't met Jane before Natalie's death and b. Jane doesn't do much thinking about herself... so yeah. I'm not even sure if I like her or not. She seems more like a vessel for the reader to witness the drama of the other characters without having her own drama. So far at least.

Kate: I actually like Kate and how she's so dual-faced. I'm curious what she's hiding. being claustrophobic is a good addition to her character.

Rhys: I think I actually like him the most. He's very observant and know that everyone is creepy. And he seems to actually care about Jane.

Dean: Not a big fan of him. He seems the one who hides himself the most and I see him capable of going on a rampage and killing everyone with a rusty nail or something.

Natalie: Is freaking dead, apparently psychotic and some kind of seer? She seems to predict shit going down. That's the part of the book that actually interests me the most. She's also a raging bitch, plunging Jane into this mess.

Other characters: Are either creepy as fuck or neglectable.

Character rating: interesting

Why I stopped reading: I read 9 chapters for the book club but then got distracted reading something more fun and I kinda stopped there.

Grade: I'm on the fence a little because I think you need a lot of motivation sunk into your plot and the writing is sort of funky, but I'm going to give you a Pass because the mystery is interesting.

Song: Because that song is just as confusing as your story. No other link. I don't even know what that woman is singing about.
