Tahari

Lunch had finally crept around and I found myself in the library taking advantage of the assignment Mr. Robinson gave us; just in case we wanted extra credit. It wasn't necessarily mandatory on my behalf but as bad as I wanted a seat in LSU, I was going to take full advantage. It was a report in Ap Calculus II. We were to research mathematicians. The computers were occupied so I settled on doing it the old fashioned way and reading a book on the topic given. I sat quietly at the table with my elbows rested upon the table. My eyes followed the words of the Biographical Encyclopedia of Mathematicians By Donald R. FranceschettiMarshall Cavendish, vol.1, 1999 as I would often jot down any notes that I believed were important in my composition book.

Letting the depths of my mind take in the book, I couldn't help but hear my name being called. Rather muffled, I continued to read the book and with that, my name was called once again but much louder but was quickly silenced once I heard the librarian, Mrs. Hayes shush whoever it was calling my name. Not even bothering to see who it was, I turned the page of the book and continued reading.

Feeling a presence near me, I continued on with reading as someone pulled up a chair in front of me. "I was looking all over for you", a sweet voice spoke and with that I took my eyes away from the book and gazed at who was sitting across from me.

"I'm just doing some extra credit for Mr. Robinson's class. I had to take full advantage.", I said as I placed my attention back on the book and continued on with what I was doing.

"Tahari, why are you always wasting your lunch hour away? I mean, you have all Ap classes which you're holding 4.0's in and I know that you are determined to get into LSU, which there's no doubt in my mind that you won't", she said followed by a sigh. "We don't have any classes together, we barely see each other anymore when we're not in school and I mean, we haven't had lunch together in weeks. We talk over the phone and we text but it's always about your work. Or you'd have to cut the conversations short because you have to finish an assignment and so on.", she said as she held her head up with her right palm as her right elbow rested upon the table. "I just miss you Hari", she said softly.

Taking my attention away from the book, I gazed at my saddened friend. She wore her emotions on her face. Sighing, I closed the encyclopedia book as well as my composition book for the time being. "I'm sorry, I've been so swamped in so much school work, I didn't know that I've been neglecting our friendship.", I said sincerely as I clasped my hands together. "So what's been going on, anything I should know?", I queried.

Sitting up straight in her seat, a soft smile crept upon her face. "Well, I met a guy", she said softly.

Mirroring the soft smile, I spoke. "Oh yeah? Tell me about him", I said candidly as I tuned out the slight noises surrounding us.

"Well for starters, he's older. He's 22", she said and before I could speak on the age difference she held her hand up and continued. "Before you speak on his age, just take into mind that the guys our age are extremely immature. They only have one thing on their mind and I'm not trying to go that route right now. The guy I met is so handsome, seems chill, as far as I know anyway. I met him yesterday and I'm going to hang out with him soon", she continued.

"Listen, as much as this bothers me, I won't speak bad on what you have going on because he could possibly be a good guy but in the same sense he could be crazy. So my advice to you is to just be careful, seriously. The murder rate out here is crazy and I'd hate to lose you.", I said sincerely and with that she reached over and placed her right hand over my clasped hands.
