It's been a week already and I still can't get what Mello said out of my head.

All I knew was that a couple of our care takers would come to the selected person's dorm during the night, as to not disturb anyone else, and retrieve them for the test. The worst part: tonight was the night that someone was going to be chosen.

All three of them had reassured me all day and told me to get some sleep, and as much as I wanted to, I couldn't. I wouldn't let my eye lids touch, I couldn't. Would I even be able to pass this test? I've already been locked up in a dark room for years on end, so why would this be any different?

Well, I guess I was about to find out. I laid in bed with my back to my door. I heard it open quietly as a pair of light feet make their way over to my bedside.

'Well, I guess that I don't have time to decided then.'  I thought to myself as a hand lightly placed itself on my shoulder.

"Karma?" a soft voice coos. My eyes widened at the familiar sound.

I throw the covers off and turn around to see the face that matched the voice.

"Watari!" I whisper-shouted as I threw my arms around his neck. He chuckled lightly before hugging back.

"It's great to see you again. How is everything, young miss?"

Despite what I'm internally feeling, I put on a smile.

"Everything's been great so far. I've even made a few friends." I explain.

"That's wonderful. I'll be sure to inform master L if you wish." I nod happily as he chuckles again.

His voice becomes a little more serious, but not unnerving.

"Now, I know what you may have heard about this test, but it's really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Despite what they say, no one has ever gone insane from this. They did have to leave Whammy's though." I sigh in relief upon hearing this.

'So they won't let me go insane, just scare the crap out of me. I guess for e, I should say more insane. Hehehe~'

"Besides, if he didn't think you were ready, master L wouldn't have had it been prepared for you."

"Wait, L set this up?" I ask in disbelief.

            He nods before speaking again.

"Yes, he wanted to keep in touch with the current head of Whammy's so that he would know when you would be ready for this." Watari explains.

"I understand, but why does L want me to do this? What's the point?" I questioned him.

"You see Miss, from the moment that L first met you, he told me that he felt there was something different about you. He wasn't sure what it was at first, but he wanted to get to know you. Eventually he told me that he wanted you to join Whammy's, not to get rid of you, but because he believes that you have what it takes to surpass him."

My eyes widen at Watari's statement. Does L really want me, a part ghoul, part human to succeed him? Of course I hadn't told anyone I was part ghoul, but, I saw no need to and figured that they would never need to find out.

            Boy, was I wrong there.

"Now, let us be off." he offers me his arm as I stand from my warm bed, the only place I really want to be right now rather than back at HQ with L himself.
