We are out on the town again

We are out on the town again.

I'm driving Ari is navigating. We'd rented one of the bright green EVs that sat along the side of the street for rental. Once you reached your destination one simply parked the car in rental spot.

Ari is staring out the window. She looks fantastic. We are both dressed to impress in black clubbing dresses. She wanted to go out in celebration of our enrollment. Honestly, she would've gone clubbing for any reason. But tonight is different her mood is different.

In the last week she'd always "pre-gamed"; drunk before we could even reach our destination. Tonight, she is still sober. Which is perfect. I want the chance to talk to her. To sort out what we were. Was she my girlfriend? Friends with benefits? Just friends. I truly hope it's not the last. I'd take anything but that.

"Pull over right here." Ari directs.

"Are you sure," I ask.

Everything looks the same to me. The streets in Paris are confusing. She is always sure so I pull over into a parking rental spots before she can answer.

The street is a sprawling bar scene. People are sitting outside, walking from bar to bar, seated inside restaurants. It doesn't look much different than America. The only differences I noticed was no one ever asked for ID and almost all the bars had good restaurant seating. And people had a different vibe; less rowdy. But I was no expert. I hadn't done much clubbing in the US. Just the one-time Ari had taken me.

I wish I could do that night over. Spin her into my arm on the dance floor. It would've been the perfect moment. She'd looked happy, beautiful, so surprised I'd pulled her close against me. Tonight, I want a redo.

"I'm sure," Ari says. "A friend told me about Marais Nord. This scene should be fun."

She gets out of the parked car and I follow her out into the Parisian night. She seems distracted. Not quite present. As I mentioned earlier, I've become attuned to her. I walk up beside her and loop my arm into hers. This is when she'd usually pull me closer. Instead, she pulls out her phone and looks down at it.
