Chapter Twelve continued...
I stare at the spread in front of Ari.
She's got fresh avocados, tomatoes, onions, and various other spices and herbs. I cross my arm and rest them on the counter, then lean my chin against my hands as I watch her work. She is cutting up tomatoes. Her knifes skills are impressive.
I don't really have anything I want to say right away. It's strange but I only want to watch her. She's moved on to herbs now. Maybe cilantro?
"What are you making?" I ask.
"Guacamole," She says.
She picks up an avocado and starts to slice it open.
I cringe, "Eww, gross."
She stops cutting and finally looks up at me.
"Guacamole is amazing."
I shake my head. "No, it's gross and mushy and green."
"You've probably never had fresh guacamole before. Just the chemical preserved guac in Taco Bell burritos and over-processed flavored chips."
I shrug. She has a point.
She looks back down at her cutting board. Then proceeds to remove the pit and slice the avocado into cubes.
"What other foods don't you like?" She asks.
I can't seem to think of anything. I run through all the vegetables and fruits in my head. I end up thinking about the things I hate on my pizza.
"Olives."
She groans as if I've physically hurt her.
"Okay, that one hurt my soul."
"Who taught you to cook?" I ask.
She smiles. "My dad."
"Did your mom teach you to cook?" She asks.
"No," I shake my head. "I taught myself and I only know how to cook a few things."
