Chapter Four

I watch Ari in awe from across the round table

I watch Ari in awe from across the round table.

Ari had once mentioned to me she spoke multiple languages. I'd been impressed when she said it but watching it in action is a different story. It's making my head spin. Everyone at the table is from a different country. The only language we all have in common is the one we're all trying to learn; French. And we're all at various levels of understanding. It's not very helpful.

Ari is acting as a translator. Russian, Spanish, French, English, Spanish, French. Switching back and forward to speak to us. Well, not us.

She's not speaking to me.

She'd asked for space. And I'm doing my best to give it to her. I'd left the apartment before she woke up this morning. It took me almost an extra hour to get to my lessons...I got lost on the metro. But when lunchtime came around, I found myself in the same predicament. The one I always seemed to find myself in. I had nowhere to sit.

I'd walked into the cafeteria with Hannah who spotted Ari and immediately sat at her table. I didn't feel like eating alone today. So, sue me, I'm sitting with Ari today despite her wishes. I did make sure to pick the farthest seat from her and one not directly in front of her. I'd be too tempted to stare.

"Brilliant idea, that is. Let's hit the tiles tonight!" Hannah says to my left.

A few of the other girl's chime-in in their native language or broken French. Hannah and Ari are the only ones I understand. They're all planning on going out tonight. I believe its Ari's suggestion, but it could've been one of the other girls. I'm not invited. If she's going I can't.

A dark-haired girl sitting next to me speaks in Russian. It grabs Ari's attention. Her eyes flick to the girl, then her eyes land on me. Then she hastily looks away and starts talking to someone else.

The poor girl next to me doesn't realize she's picked the wrong place to sit. She is doomed to be overlooked by Ari today. Ari has been doing her best to ignore the existence of my side of the table. Even Hannah, sitting a seat away from me, is struggling to get her attention.
