I wake up in Ari's bed.

The sun is shining brightly in my face. Her pillows and sheets smell like bliss. I'd sleep in longer, but for an incessant buzz in the back of my mind reminding me of something. I'm forgetting something. Something important.

I sit up abruptly and throw off the blankets. She'd covered me up. I leap to my feet, then I yelp. There's a dull ache on the bottom of my foot. I groan then hop up and down on one foot to look. There are bits of dried blood smeared on the bottom of my foot. I must have cut myself on the glass last night without realizing.

I put my foot down and then hobble into the living room. She's not here. I look around at the apartment. She'd already cleaned and straightened everything up. I rush over to my bedroom but she's not in there either, but I hadn't really thought she would be.

I see her busted phone on the kitchen counter. There is a posted note on top. Her version of a text message. I read it.

"Visiting family in Boudreaux. Back in a week. – Ari

P.S. I love you."

I stare at the note in confusion. And reread "P.S. I love you" over and over again. I don't know what she means. Is that something people just write on notes for fun? Like xoxo? And more confusing in-between "week" and "Ari" she'd scribbled and crammed "with Apollo." As if it were a second thought. Her note truly said...

"Visiting family in Boudreaux. Back in a week, with Apollo. – Ari

P.S. I love you."

Had she added it to bother me? She is the most confusing person I've ever met.

I limp into her bedroom and check for her suitcase. It's missing and there does appear to be a couple fewer piles of clothes on the floor. I hope she is with family. It would be the best place for her. Maybe they'd be able to help her.

And Apollo? She'd taken him to meet her family. If he makes her feel good...No. I still hate him. Friends can hate other friend's significant others. I hope he has a rotten time.

There's a knock on the door. It could be her. I rush out of her room and fling open the door.

It's Charli.

In one arm, she has a large paper bag with a long baguette sticking out of it. In her other hand a coffee. She grins at me.

"Damn, you opened the door fast. I didn't have time to figure out what I was going to say."

I stare blankly at her.

"I said I'd wait for you to text. But I was in the neighborhood and we'll see you'd said that you didn't have food in the fridge..."

She rambles when's she nervous just like me.

"And I thought I know a way to a woman's heart. Coffee. And then I passed by a boulangerie and it snowballed from there..."
