The bright sun peered through my windows, reflecting onto my face. I adjusted my eyes to the light and rubbed away the sleep. I slowly got up still half asleep, causing me to stub my toe on the corner of my bedside table "fuck" I said quietly squinting my eyes from the pain.

Still half asleep, I made my way downstairs to the smell of freshly cooked pancakes. "Good morning Amelia" my nana said placing the food on the table. " morning" I say taking a seat.

After breakfast I helped my nana clean up the dishes. "Hey nana I'm gonna take a walk around, scope out the place a little" I said slipping on my shoes. "Oh before you go you might want to take this" she said handing me a small black box. I opened the box, revealing purple and blue switchblade with a black handle

I looked at her confused as to why she just gave me a switchblade. " just incase the socs are around, don't want u getting jumped" she said to me smiling. "Socs?" I said confused. " there the wealthy people on the south side of town. They come down to our side to look for trouble with greasers which are a gang on our side, but they aren't as bad as you think" she said " right, well we didn't have any gang rivalry back in Australia so this is new" I said, eyes wide, slowly walking out the door. I put the switchblade in my back pocket and started my walk down the foot path.

I was walking for about 5 minutes when I came across a gas station called the "DX". I walked in, the bell above the door ringing, catching the cashiers attention. I gave a warm smile and disappeared into the isles.

I slowly walked back to the counter placing down a packet of gum and a coke bottle. "That would be $5" the very handsome boy said. I pulled out a five dollar note and placed it on the counter. "Sorry, I have to ask are you knew here" he asked curiously, placing the bill in the cash register. I giggled. "Yes I am, I just moved here to live with my grandma" I said smiling. He seemed shocked for a moment, taken back by my Australian accent. " we're did u move from?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowed. "Sydney, Australia "I said smiling at him. "Wow, that's a long way from here. What made u move to Tulsa?" He said now leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. I hesitated for a second, not wanting to bring up my dad. He must have seen the worried look on my face and instantly took back what he said. "S-sorry I shouldn't have asked" he said apologetically. "N-no it's okay, it's just family problems" I said looking down to my feet. There was an awkward silent for a few seconds before I broke it. "Well I must be on my way now, nice meeting you" I said grabbing my bag of things " yeah you too. Hey I didn't catch your name". he said shifting in his seat. "Amelia. Amelia Anderson" I said smiling. "Sodapop. Sodapop Curtis" he said returning a smile as I walked out letting the door shut behind me
