The mall had been set on fire following the devastation of the night, it was easier than explaining the truth. Alex hadn't found a moment to speak to Max, the two of them both in a mess due to losses within their family.

Alex was sat in the back of an ambulance with Steve, the medics had insisted on checking the pair over, both of them with a fair few injuries. Their mom was a few steps away, talking to an officer about Atlas's passing and trying to keep herself composed.

Alex felt emotionless, everything had happened in the past hour, she hadn't even been able to give her brother a proper goodbye, he just bled to death. He was a hero, and Alex wouldn't hear any other excuse.

Max was sat with her Mom in an ambulance across from them, she was leant into her mother the way Alex was with Steve while they both sobbed.

Alex couldn't bring herself to open Atlas's letter, not wanting to face the heart break all over again. She just leant into Steve as her held her tight, both of them were a mess.

Alex noticed El hugging Joyce as the older woman looked broken, that could only mean on thing, Hopper didn't make it. Alex's felt bad for El, she would be left without him again, the man was essentially her father after all of this.

Max looked up with red eyes and locked her glance with Alex who was in a similar state. Alex exchanged a look with Steve who nodded her on in encouragement. The two girl walked between the vehicles and gripped each other tightly, not letting go as they held each other like they were the others anchor.

They didn't share any words, just sobbed quietly into each other. Their lips briefly met once or twice but it wasn't deep, more of a reassurance.

They would get through this, they had to get through this.
