lucas and dustin were having their own conversation behind a degrading car whilst steve, max and I got to work on creating a safe base to hide from dart.

"so.." max trailed off whilst coming up to me, "is it true?"

"is what true?" I asked, knowing exactly what she was on about.

"y'know.. that you and that mage girl have superpowers?" she asked, whispering the 'superpowers' part for safety after I'm presuming lucas told her the consequences.

"hmm.. maybe." I replied whilst nailing a piece of wood across a window of the rusting school bus.

"oh, come on." she whined, "please show me, from what it sounds like you're basically wonder woman!"

"well I don't have a golden lasso so-" I began but I paused when max gave me a unimpressed glare.

"alright, alright," I raised my hands up in innocence, "whatcha wanna see?"

"lift the bus." she replied instantly, as if she'd been waiting for this moment for a while.

"lift the bus?!" I exclaimed, "..I dunno max, I've never really done anything like that before-"

"you stopped that demogorgon thing." she interrupted.

"true, but that wasn't as heavy as a bus." I reasoned.

"welll..." she said, dragging the l's, "I don't see any reason I should believe you then, especially without any proof-"

"I'll do it, I'll do it, okay?" I huffed before a large grin spread across max's face in victory of getting what she wanted. she backed away from the bus as I positioned myself. I lifted my arm into it's place before accumulating all of my energy into one point, that point being the bus. the large vehicle started to rustle about slightly at first before I raised my hand a little and the wheels left the ground and the whole bus began to hover a few centimetres above the grassy terrain.

"holy shit.." max breathed in astonishment, "make it go higher."

I fought through the struggle of keeping the bus up for so long and refocused on making it levitate even higher. I strained my hand even more as I felt the usual cold steam of blood drip from my nose. the bus was now at least a couple feet off the ground before I totally lost control of it and I fell to my knees, along with the bus crashing to the ground.

"oh my god!" max cried out as she knelt to my side, "that was awesome!"

I shot her a thankful but exhausted smile in response.

"are you alright?" she asked whilst scanning me for injuries.

"yeah.. just a bit tired.. that's all-" I answered as I felt my eyelids grow heavier and heavier.

"hey! dickheads!" steve called out to lucas and dustin, "how come the only people actually helping are these two girls? and one of them I don't even know and the other just lifted a goddamn bus with her mind!"

dustin and lucas shared an exasperated look before jogging over to join in with making this base.

steve carefully poured a trail gasoline from the big pile of meat to the bus while max sorted out the ladders that would be needed in the bus.

dustin and lucas.. I honestly don't know what they were doing but I was partially helping and partially regaining energy by just leaning up against the bus until it was eventually time to go inside.

dustin took one last look around the junkyard before the doors closed behind him and he took his seat.

——————————————

about 40 minutes had passed and it was now nighttime, lucas had just climbed up the ladder with his binoculars to search for any approaching monsters.

meanwhile, in the main area of the bus, steve sat flicking his lighter on and off in total boredom.

"so, you've fought one of these things before too?" max asked steve, he just blankly nodded in response.

"and you like, didn't die?" she then asked.

"shit, don't be an idiot, okay?" dustin snapped, "he obviously didn't die. why are you even here if you're not taking this seriously. just go home."

"geesh, someone's cranky. past your bedtime?" max scoffed whilst climbing the ladder to join lucas but not before her snarky comment earned a snigger from me.

"that's good, just show her you don't care." steve complimented.

"I don't." dustin truthfully told him, but steve gave him a wink nevertheless.

"why are you winking steve?" dustin questioned, clearly growing a little annoyed, "stop."

after this mini conversation between the two idiot boys there was a bearable silence. I took this time to stare out through a small crack in the metal plates that bordered the windows and I realised that it was almost a whole year since will disappeared, it was almost a whole year since I met el. jeez, doesn't time fly, I mean, today marks 357 days since eleven's own disappearance and-

"y/n?" someone called out whilst prodding my shoulder, I turned my head to find dustin looking at me weirdly, "you okay?.. your eyes are kinda.. teary.."

"oh, um.." I quickly rubbed the tears that I didn't even recognise were there away as I gave him a fake smile, "yeah, I'm good.."

he wearily nodded before both of our attention's were stolen by a loud growl in the distance.

"you see him?" dustin asked steve as they both pressed their faces up against a chained part of the bus' protection that you could see through. I just continued to look through the small gap from where I sat at.

"no." steve answered, yet they still kept their eyes peeled.

"lucas, what's going on?" dustin called up to the roof.

"hold on!" lucas replied, "...oh shit! I've got eyes! ten o' clock! ten o' clock!"

"there." steve pointed out the approaching creature as it stalked over like a dog on all fours.

"he's not taking the bait.. why's he not taking the bait?!" steve quietly cried out.

"maybe he's not hungry?" dustin offered.

"maybe he's sick of cow." steve said before backing away from the window and heading towards the door.

"steve?!" dustin and I exclaimed, "what are you doing?!"

"just get ready." he replied whilst holding his lighter out and chucking it to dustin.

nailed bat in hand, steve cautiously took his first few steps out of the old bus, the doors closed behind him as low pitched growls echoed from around the junkyard.

he stepped very slowly before whistling as if he were calling for a dog, "come on, buddy.." he spoke softly.

"what's he doing?!" max asked as she climbed back down the ladder.

"expanding the menu." dustin replied.

"human tastes better than cat, I promise.." steve's voice was shaky and laced with fear as he swung his bat in circles.

"he's insane." max said as no one could pull their eyes off the once teenage loser, now dumb-kid protector.

"he's awesome." dustin corrected with his usual toothy grin.
