"-we need to get to hawkins." el announced, cooped up in the van with the others and I.

"I know, and we will." mike told her, "but right now we need to get you guys somewhere safe, there's gonna be people behind us."

"no, mike, we need to get to hawkins tonight." el protested.

"we'll never make it, that's over 2000 miles!" jonathan butted in.

"we need to find a way!" el urged, "if we don't.. they are going to die."

"who's gonna die?" will inquired nervously, his voice shaky, "el? y/n? who's going to die?.."

but neither of us responded, we just looked at him, a sad expression across both of our faces.

the surfer boy pizza van was parked outside a gas station, finished with collecting it's gas as we all crowded around the phone box.

"-I'll take one seat if you have it." jonathan spoke into the telephone, "I mean, please, there has to be something that you can do. one of our family members is really, really sick and I don't know if she's gonna make it through the night. is there any way you could just.. no, no. like I said before-" jonathan's voice slowly faded away as the back of my mind began to speak to me again.

"her time is nearly up, y/n." the voice seethed, "your time is nearly up." a tick-tocking noise suddenly rang through the back of my head. with each strike of the noise came an unimaginable pain in my head.

I silently groaned in pain as I quickly lifted my hand up to my head. testing if it could ease the pain, but it didn't help at all.

I didn't want to draw attention to myself so I slipped around the corner, out of sight. a drip of red blood fell from my nose, splattering down onto the tarmac below.

with each tick-tocking noise, the pain grew stronger and stronger until it got to the point where I started to wince in pain. I looked down to my hands and, as expected, they had taken the shape of vecna's nightmarish claws again.

"no, no, not now.." I whispered, holding back many tears.

"-hey, hey, n/n?" will's voice suddenly rang through my ears, pulling me out of my reverie as I looked up at him with my tearful eyes, "whoa, whoa, it's okay.. what's wrong?"

he stepped closer to me, looking at me with soft, caring eyes, "are you okay? your- your eyes are bloodshot.."

"wha- what?" I croaked, quickly rubbing my eyes with my hands, that had now shifted back to normal.

"y/n, if there's something going on, please tell us." will said, his voice careful and easy.

"i-it's nothing really, a-and el already knows." I hiccuped, now wiping the blood from my nose. thankfully, the throbbing pain had come to a stop.

"y/n, if this monster guy has gotten to you.. please tell me." will pleaded, desperate for an answer.

I sighed a shaky sigh before glancing down to the drop of blood on the floor, "yeah- the monster guy got me." I dragged my eyes up off the ground, "he's in my head, he's been bugging me all the time lately.. he- he made me kill about thirty people.. I- I'm sorry.."

"oh n/n," will soothed, patting my shoulder assuringly, "it's not your fault."

"I- I know." I replied, trying to stop my sobbing.

"good, now, you wanna go tell the others? or.." will suggested kindly.

"yeah," I nodded, "let's- let's go tell the others." will nodded back with a slight smile before leading me back.

I noticed that el was gone and she was gazing up at a billboard that was advertising a scenic route.

I cleared my throat, gaining everyone besides from el's attention, "I- I have something to tell you guys." I announced, "..um, so y'know this monster guy?" the guys all nodded, all confused as fuck but they nodded, "well basically, he's taken over a part of my mind. I'm technically possessed by him, like how will was. and- um, this monster guy has made me kill like- 30 people or something, I dunno.." I began to mumble the last part, all of the piercing eyes on me suddenly got too much. it was weird because usually I don't mind when I'm the centre of attention but it was different this time, I didn't like it. it made me feel.. uncomfortable almost.

the guys didn't say anything because I mean, what could you say?? one of your friends has just told you that they're basically connected to the dude who is tryna destroy the world.

"I- and how could you get.. unpossessed?" mike inquired, his forehead creased.

"by burning vecna, the monster guy." I replied.

"like how it was with will but the other way around?" jonathan offered and I nodded in agreement.

"-I have a way." el suddenly spoke, making me jump in shock slightly.

"huh?" argyle slurred, we were all on a different page to el now.

"a way to protect max, from here." she confirmed.

using her index finger, el drew a circle on the van's window, thanks to the natural resource of condensation.

"this is max." she announced whilst adding a body, hair and a smiley face to the figure, "when 001 attacks he will be in her mind." she then drew a little bubble that was connected to the drawing of max's head, this bubble contained another figure, "but I can do that too. I went into
y/n's mind, into mama's, into billy's. I can go into max's, she can carry me to vecna." el then drew another stick figure in the bubble, "I can piggyback. I can protect her." she concluded before turning around, facing the others and I again.

"mind fight, righteous." argyle grinned.

"wait so, you actually think this could work?" mike quizzed, standing beside will, who was clinging onto his arm.

"a bathtub would help." el said.

"yeah, gotta be clean to enter the mind." argyle agreed.

"what? no, it's a sensory deprivation tank." mike corrected him, "it helps her calm down and focus on her powers."

"wait.. we just passed a motel." will recalled.

"yeah, but they won't have enough salt." I replied typically.

"well, how much salt are we talking, my dudes?" argyle inquired.

"it depends on the size of the tub, but a lot." jonathan informed him.

"does 600 pounds suffice?" argyle asked with a shrug. we all shared a surprised look.

"you know a place that has 600 pounds of salt?" mike quizzed.

"let's see." argyle said under his breath whilst holding his arms out in front of el. it seemed he was taking her measurements, "yep.. mhm.." el looked at him with utter confusion. "yup, it'll work." he smiled, happy with his results.

"what will work?" el asked, still extremely confused like the rest of us.

"I know of a magical place that has all you need, my brave, little superpowered friend." argyle said, a huge smile across his face, "that mind fight is on."

he then clambered into the driver's seat of the van, "come on! ¡vámonos! let's go! pronto!" the engine sputtered to life as we all jumped inside. taking our seats before the door slammed shut behind us.

once I had taken my seat, el turned to me with affectionate eyes, "are you okay?" she asked.

"-yeah, I'm good, don't worry." I replied with a smile, bearing a couple of my teeth.

"good." el nodded, returning the smile before leaning up against me as the van zoomed down the open road.
