with intertwined fingers, el and I slowly approached the large room that contained nina. we looked around, searching for brenner or well, anyone left to be honest. until very suddenly, the heavy door behind us swung shut with a deafening clang.

"NO, WAIT!" el yelled as we both rushed to the door, but our palms only slammed against the closed, chilling-cold door, "NO! NO!"

"dammit!" I grunted whilst giving the door a powerful kick, which only caused pain in my leg.

"ah, ah, shit." I hissed whilst hopping around on one leg, back to the centre of the room with el.

"you can't leave, eleven." brenner's voice called out through the open room. he creepily stalked from around the water tank, his footsteps echoing.

"where is dr owens?" el asked him.

"the question should be, where is anyone?" brenner spat, "after thirteen slaughtered almost everyone in here."

a surge of guilt panged in my mind, I backed away ever so slightly, taken aback with the words brenner had just spat out.

"where is he?" el pressed again, annoyed at the fact brenner was trying to guilt trip me.

"dr owens had a change in heart." brenner casually said, yet his voice dripping with venom, "I know you both wish to go to him, and there's nothing I can do to stop you from forcing open that door. but if the rest of my men," his piercing stare burned into my soul, "the ones that remain alive," he then pulled his eyes from me, "hear you coming, they will kill him. and just the two of you alone will never manage to find your way out of this desert and back to your friends. and so, here's what we're going to do, you and I, eleven. are going to complete our work together. and when I decide that you are ready, we will return to hawkins together, papa and daughter."

"and- and what about me?" I asked, almost choking on my tears.

brenner sighed, "and as for you, thirteen." he proceeded to stalk closer to me, "you deserve to be locked up. not even in a jail, not even in a lab, not even.. anywhere. you deserve to rot somewhere with no human interaction until you die. because you-"

"SHUT UP!" el snapped, shoving brenner hard by his shoulder.

brenner then looked down to el, "I don't understand why you.. defend her. she's a monster, eleven. leave her and finish this program with me."

"don't. you. ever. call. her. a. monster." el snarled, taking a short break after each word she growled out.

"I will do as I please, eleven." brenner replied, seeming proud of himself.

I was now angry at brenner, I had dealt with the sting that his words brought and I was now infuriated. my hands balled into fists and my eyebrows furrowed as I glared up at this evil, cold hearted man.

"you get angry by the pettiest things, thirteen." he said, "you act like a child."

I had two choices, I could kill brenner now on the spot but that would just prove him right. or I could just calmly walk away, proving him wrong.

after taking a short time to decide, I huffed at brenner before storming off into the corner of the room. but as I reached the corner, a group of beefy men grabbed ahold of me. these men looked different to the men from before, these men looked like soldiers, government soldiers. I had fallen into brenner's trap, like a fly into a spider's web.

"don't move else I'll shoot." one of the soldiers hissed as he held a pistol in between my eyes. I gulped and almost went crossed-eyed whilst looking up at the cold gun that was pressed against my forehead.

these soldiers dragged me away, through a hidden door and I could hear el and brenner arguing in the background.

the government soldiers continued to drag me through the corridors, taking me up a set of unsafe-looking stairs. my body bumped and thrashed against each step, I was going to be covered in bruises by the end of this. the gun still remained at my head even after we finally reached the top.

fresh air filled my lungs for the first time in days, and oh it felt so refreshing. despite that, sand still blew everywhere, I had to squint my eyes to avoid being blinded by the nasty stuff. a helicopter circled around in the sky above, almost creating a tornado of yellow dust.

the men continued to drag me until we were about 50 meters or so away from the small, metal shed. they dropped me and I landed with a hard thud onto the sandy terrain.

"I've got one of the girls, what would you like me to do with her, sir?" the soldier that held the gun to my head asked through his walkie talkie.

radio crackle emitted from the walkie until a deep, booming voice replied, "kill her."

"no... no.. please.." I whimpered, crawling backwards but another soldier repositioned himself behind me so I couldn't escape.

"please.. please." I trembled, tears rolling down my cheeks. my lip quivered in fear, he was going to kill me. he'd been instructed to, so he definitely was going to.

the soldier glared down at me, he didn't care. if anything he wanted to kill me. with a tough look on his face, he slipped his finger down to the trigger, he was about to pull it. I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for impact, my breaths all shaky and fast-paced.

the sound of the gun firing blasted through my eardrums, but I wasn't going to let this dumb little bullet just kill me now, how lame. after yanking my head back, I jerked my head to the right and the bullet changed it's course so very quickly, the small object went zooming right into the soldier on my right's stomach. the soldier howled in pain and fell to the ground, he was now dead.

"holy crap! look!" I exclaimed, pointing over into the distance at nothing.

the extremely gullible soldiers all swung around to look but once they saw nothing there, they turned back around again to find me running off.

one of the soldiers groaned at the fact he'd fell for that dumb trick as he aimed his gun at me.

"I DIDN'T WANT TO KILL YOU GUYS!" I shouted to them before twisting my head slightly, killing the soldiers instantly. their necks snapped with a sickening cracking noise before they all tumbled to the floor.

I turned on my heels again, about to run but I was met face to face with a yellow volkswagen vanagon. the people in the vehicle and I all screamed as I covered my face with my arms. the van skidded to an abrupt stop and relief flushed over me as I recognised the friendly faces inside.

"Y/N! BEHIND YOU! WATCH OUT!" will yelled, pointing into the distance behind me.

I turned around to find brenner lay flat out on the floor with the same helicopter levitating in the sky. el ferociously stood, not scared of this helicopter at all, even though she currently had a firearm aimed at her. something crazy was about to happen..
