a humid heat lingered around in the back of the van, the temperature wasn't cooling down at all. the police vehicle continued to speed down the open desert road, gaining speed as not a single other vehicle passed.

the evening was now approaching, the sun began to set quicker and quicker and a thick layer of fluffy clouds hung about in the air. I sat on the bench, with el next to me, she was resting her head upon my shoulder. we both felt very sleepy, we'd been doing absolutely nothing for the past whole hour of the journey.

suddenly, a loud screech of rubber tires came from behind. el and I perked our tired heads up to investigate. a line of three black cars were following us, this couldn't be good.

the cars got closer and closer, el and I backed away into the furthest corner of the van. the cars had now sped around the van, one of them jolting forward and blocking the van's way. the van skidded to a halt, causing el and I to thud against the floor with a thump.

"NICE DRIVING, PRICK!" I yelled out, thrashing a balled fist at the thin metal sheet of the van's insides.

"you transporting a jane hopper and a y/n wheeler?" a woman in a suit asked the driver.

"-yeah, what is this?" he replied.

"I'll take them off your hands." she flashed her police badge off.

el and I shared an anxious look as the driver exited the car and headed around to the back.

"when the doors open.." el whispered into my ear, "run."

the noise of the doors unlocking could be heard and just as the cop was about to open the doors himself, el leapt forward and smashed them open. she jumped out of the van, followed by me quickly after, we broke out into a short-lasted run before we both were caught and thrown to the ground.

I heard el yelp as the men began to handle her, "YOU GET THE FUCK OFF OF HER, YOU HEAR ME! DONT EVEN-" my shouts were cut short by a surge of electricity shuddering through my body. the bastards had tasered me and I now hissed in pain as I tried to regain my stand, two other large suited men thumped forward and helped me up.

"get off me!" I spat, jerking my head to the side and the two men fell to the dusty road.

up ahead, another figure exited one of the cars. I looked over to el, two large men were holding her as she stared at the man ahead. she knew this guy from somewhere.

"hey, kiddo." he grinned slightly at el before he shuffled on his feet to face me, "ah- and a new face around town, I see."

"sorry about all the theatrics out there," the man I now knew to be owens apologised, "I- I didn't mean to scare you guys. but.. err.. you both got yourselves into quite the little predicament, didn't you?"

el took a sip from her drink as my eyes nervously searched the diner, looking for any sign of insecurity or danger.

"y'know eleven, I relocated you and the byers to lenora because I thought, y'know, safe town, small, dull, far from hawkins, nothing could happen here." owens continued, "and then you, ms wheeler, you show up and this huge fight breaks out." he chuckled, "I've seen the video, nice of you to stand up for eleven."

"mmm," I hummed in response, my eyes finally stopped darting about and refocused on the scene in front of me.

"and then, of course, eleven goes and does the thing with the roller skate." he concluded as the waitress came over.

"ready to order some food?" she politely inquired.

"I think so, yeah." owens smiled, "I'll just.. uh.. some more coffee and, um, I'll have a.. how about the club special?"

the worker returned the smile before writing his order down. owens then turned back to el and I, "whatever you guys want, it's all on me."

el took a short moment to decide before answering with, "waffles, please."

all three eyes then turned to me, "um, y/f/f please."

"of course." the waitress grinned before writing the two food orders onto her notepad. she then returned back to the kitchen.

"never too late in the day for breakfast, that's what I say." owens joked, referring to el's order of waffles.

"are we in trouble?" el pondered, on behalf of the both of us.

"for the roller rink thing? no. well,
y/n, I know someone that will be very intrigued in you but that's off the point for now." owens answered.

"that's not why you're here?" el quizzed.

"-to be honest with you, kid," owens replied, "I-I wish it was. last night, I saw something. something I've been dreading for a long time. I don't know how to say this other than just to say it, hawkins is in danger."

those four words sent unnerving chills down my spine, my muscles tensed as I leant in closer over the table.

"you both have fought this evil before and you've won." owens continued, "but this evil, it's like a virus. each time it returns, it comes back stronger, smarter, deadlier. a war is coming to hawkins." his gaze relaxed slightly as he spoke the next part, "there are good people, brave friends who have helped you fight your battle in the past. y/n being a great example of one of them." owens gestured to me, "but they alone can't win this war, not without you, eleven. I know it's not fair to ask more of you but I wouldn't be here if I didn't think this was the only way, if I didn't think you were the only one who might have a shot to hit this thing so hard it can't get back up."

"I don't have my powers." el reminded him.

"what if I told you there was a way.." owens spoke, I could tell el was on the edge of her seat, she was so eager for him to finish his response, "a way to bring them back."

"but how?" el replied, confused, I was confused too as we awaited owens' response.

"I have feared this day would come for quite some time now." owens explained, "so I have created a program that should help return your powers. and now, there are many people who don't believe in me. they don't believe in you. they don't understand that you are hawkins' only hope, and these people are out here to get you, so it's risky. which is why I am asking for your permission, will you come with me?"

el looked up at owens and hesitantly nodded before speaking, "but what about y/n?"

owens sighed deeply, "there's a long story about you, ms wheeler. but I promise, all will be explained if you come with me."

"yeah, I'll go." I replied and owens' expressions lightened up, "but only because el's going."

it was now nighttime, the sky was dark as the car hurtled down the desert roads again. I was sat in the back with el, comfortably laying upon her side as she held me close. a light smile was spread upon my lips as I snuggled up closer, further into her heartwarming embrace.
