the familiar sound of a camera clicking rang through mike and I's ears as we stood, very unimpressed, on the first step on the staircase.

the photo immediately printed and dropped to the floor, karen bent down to go retrieve it as she spoke, "oh, wait! just one more, okay?-"

"whyy??" we whined, honestly this woman must've had at least 25 pictures by now.

"you both look stunning!" she squealed whilst taking yet another photo, "anyways, mike, who's the lucky girl? and n/n, who's the lucky guy?"

mike and I raised our eyebrows and shared an amused look before breaking out into a fit of giggles.

"what?" karen asked, "what's so funny?"

"nothing, mum." I assured, my grin not fading, "nothing."

"whatever you say." karen huffed sarcastically whilst snapping another picture.

"right, that's it!" mike cried out whilst dragging me away with him.

"honestly, living in this house means you have to deal with mum-paparazzi 24/7." I complained as I followed mike to the front door.

bright, blue lights lit up the hall as everyone danced away under the disco-ball to cheesy pop songs.

a large banner that read 'snowball 84' hung proudly up on the wall along with thin-streams of tinsel.

"holy shit! what happened to you?" lucas exclaimed as dustin walked over, his hair looked.. different.

"what do you mean, what happened?" dustin questioned as his smile faded.

"what? dude." mike replied.

"your hair!" max announced.

"is there a bird nesting in there?" lucas leant forward to brush his hand through dustin's very curly locks.

"oh nah, that's the work of steve harrington!" I laughed.

"what do you mean?!" dustin said, his tone of voice sounding defensive, "there's no bird nesting in here, asshole! okay, I worked hard."

everyone then began to chuckle until 'time after time' by cyndi lauper started to play through the speakers.

lucas took a deep breath before turning to max, "max.." she swung her head around to face him, "hey." he grinned, despite it being very cheesy, "um, it's nice, right?.. you want to, um.. you wanna like.. y'know? like just you and me?.." lucas stuttered as he couldn't get the right words out of his mouth.

"are you trying to ask me to dance, stalker?" max quizzed, not sounding awkward at all.

"no, of course not." lucas lied and max raised her eyebrows in response, "unless- you want to?"

"so smooth." max typically shook her head before grabbing lucas' hand and pulling him onto the dance floor, "come on."

dustin was left to watch his first crush begin to dance with one of his best friends, a defeated sigh slipped his lips. alas, he welled up his remaining confidence before heading over to a group of girls.

"wish me luck, guys. I'm going in." he grinned as he stalked away from the boys and I.

"okay, loverboys.." I said in a teasing voice, "I know how desperately you both want to dance together-"

"y/nnn!" mike and will groaned.

"I'm only playing!" I chuckled lightly, "you two go dance, I'll be fine."

"are you sure, n/n?" mike asked, "I don't want you to be alone-"

"oh, mike." I interrupted, "I don't want me ruining you guys' night, go have fun, please."

mike and will gave me a sorrowful look before heading out, hand-in-hand to the dance floor.

I felt a weak smile curl upon my lips as I watched the two boys stare lovingly into eachother's eyes. they were totally mesmerised.

I then looked down to my fumbling hands, I very much doubted that el would come but it was still nice to go here anyway. just to lighten my mood after last month's struggles.

——————————

'every breath you take' by the police was now playing and I was still sat by myself, immersed in dumb thoughts as per usual. until the gymnasium doors opening caught my attention.

I pulled my head up to find the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen, just standing there by the now-closed doors. she wore a blue polka-dotted dress with a pink belt fastened around her waist. her hair was a luscious dark brown and she wore pink-eyeshadow around her eyes as she gazed around the hall, that was bustling with sweaty middle-schoolers.

my breathing hitched as I stood up, she'd completely taken my breath away. I felt my heart hammering against my chest as we made
eye-contact from across the hall. my cheeks were burning with a crimson blush.

slowly, we both made our way towards eachother until we met in the centre of the hall.

"y-you look.. breathtaking." I complimented truthfully with a wide smile.

el sheepishly smiled in response whilst shyly looking to her shoes.

"do.. you wanna dance?.." I asked, extremely flustered.

"I.. don't know how." el replied, sadness detectable in her voice.

"I don't either.." I told her whilst slipping by hand into her's, "so let's figure it out.. together."

el grinned brightly as I just couldn't pull my eyes off her whilst walking to a place with more room, so that we could dance.

"okay.. so I think.." I pulled el's hands up onto my shoulders, "that it goes like this.." I then placed my hands on her hips, "yeah.. this looks right."

we then slowly began to sway along to the slow, romantic song whilst gazing, completely star-struck, into eachother's glistening eyes.

————

suddenly, the moment just felt right. el and I both leaned in for the kiss and the second our lips connected, my heart melted into goo. a familiar feeling erupted in the pit of my stomach, it was almost like fluttering butterflies. it had been over a year since our lips first met and oh how I had missed it.

after about 5 seconds, we both pulled away before looking into eachother's eyes again, very affectionately.

she then rested her head against mine as we continued to sway-side-to-side.

"I love you so damn much it hurts, you get that right?" I whispered softly into her ear.

"yeah," she replied, "and I could never loose you again."
