-reader's pov-

buzzing with excitement, I tore the envelope to el's new letter open before pulling the whole page of writing out. my eyes scanned the page as I quietly read the words out under my breath.

'dear y/n,

today is day 185, feels more like 10 years! joyce says time is funny like that, emotions can make it speed up or slow down. we are all time travellers if you think about it, for example, this week is going very fast. I think because I am so busy! I have to make something called a visual aid, I hope mrs gracey will give me an A. but some exciting news, joyce got an amazing new job, she gets to work at home! she says she loves the "freedom." also, will is painting a lot, and I think it's for mike because he's not showing me what he's working on. plus, he's always telling me about how mike is always complaining because you use the phone to call me for 7 hours, when he apparently only gets 6 hours! jonathan has been acting weird lately, I think he's just nervous about college. he is still waiting for his big letter, I really hope he and nancy get to go together. but I don't know how he'll ever get to college because his car is still broken!
his funny friend argyle has been taking us to school, his hair is longer than mine! and he and jonathan like to smoke smelly plants together. jonathan says the plants are super safe because they come from the earth but to not tell joyce. but me? I am twice as happy now. you were right, it just takes time. I think I have finally adapted. and at first, I missed the spring flowers in hawkins but now I find it pretty here too. I even like school now! I am still best at math, but my grammar is getting good now also. it helps that everyone is so nice here, I have made lots of friends. even so, I am ready for spring break, mostly because I get to see you! I am so excited to see you, it is hard to breathe! are you excited too? I think you will love it here like me. I think we will have the best spring break ever. I hope my spelling was better this time, miss you!

love, el.'

almost unable to sit still due to all of the happiness that was fizzing within me, I quickly grabbed my ballpoint pen and began to scribble a reply.

'dear el,

I cannot believe it has been that long! it's crazy how fast time flies, what joyce said totally makes sense! you're visual aid sounds awesome, I'm 100% sure your teacher will give you an A. it's nice to see that joyce is happy with her job and yeah, will is right, mike is always groaning at me! and sure, I may get a little more time than him but it's all his fault for getting to the phone later than me! maybe it's for the best to avoid jonathan's plants, they sound a little.. sketchy. but I really hope him and nancy get to go to the same college too! and I'm so glad you've adapted
and made new friends! I can't wait to meet them, I'm sure I'll love it in california. I literally cannot wait, I am shaking with excitement!! your spelling is better, which shows you're improving, so well done! miss you lots,

love, y/n.'

I reapplied the lid to my pen before replacing it in its usual position. I then grabbed a spare envelope, wrote el's address and inserted my letter into it. as I walked down the stairs, wearing my hellfire shirt with my backpack slung over one of my shoulders, I sealed the envelope shut.

"morning, n/n." karen greeted me, "you catching a ride with your older friend again?"

"yup," I told her whilst grabbing the pop-tart that had just leapt up from the toaster.

"hey! that's holly's!" she scolded.

"sorry, she can have, like, pancakes or something, I'm in a rush." I shrugged before munching on the snack.

"well, you and your brother better be in a rush later, your plane leaves at 6:30 the next morning." ted reminded, "so hurry your highschool dropout club up."

"it's called hellfire, dad." I muttered as I headed over to the back door.

"oh, y/n. one last thing." karen called out.

"yes?" I swung my head around, my hand clasped around the door handle.

"is your brother up? nancy is leaving in, like, 2 minutes." she asked me.

"um, no, he's in bed still." I answered whilst leaving the house, hearing karen shout, 'MICHAEL WHEELER! GET DOWN HERE NOW!' as I lazily closed the door.

steve's car pulled up just in time, I broke out into a light jog. not forgetting to insert my letter into the mailbox before I hopped into the second row, middle seat of the car.

"hey, n/n!" robin exclaimed as she twisted her head around to give me the thumbs-up.

"hi, robin!" I grinned before taking a bite out of my pop-tart.

"oi! watch it wheeler number 2, you better not be making crumbs in my car!" steve warned as he drove his car out of maple street.

"I'm not, chill out, man!" I replied whilst dusting a few crumbs off of the car-seats.

"good, now, robin needs lady advice and she's sick of my 'useless' help so give it all you've got." steve informed whilst steering his car around hawkins' windy roads.

"spill." I said after turning to robin and wiping a couple of crumbs from my lips.

"alright, so, you know vickie, right?" robin inquired and I nodded, "well basically, she returned fast times paused at 53 minutes and 5 seconds, and you know what that means."

"mhm, they're either a perverted guy or some super gay girl." I said.

"exactly, people who like boobies!" steve exclaimed.

"-cmon man, don't say boobies!" robin groaned.

"-boobies!" steve cried out again, "I like boobies, y/n likes boobies, you like boobies. we all like boobies! vickie also likes boobies, definitely!"

"haha, boobies." I repeated the funny word, my mind clouded with the word now.

"-but we don't know that, steve! that's the whole problem, I'm nervy and shit!" robin reminded.

"-but still, she totally likes boobies!" steve said again. robin rolled her eyes as a hearty giggle escaped my lips.
