Daniel opened the front door of his mother's apartment, revealing Jakiyah standing on the other side with a bouquet of lilies in her hand. She offered Daniel an apologetic smile before extending them to him. After a deep breath, Daniel took the flowers and stepped outside of the apartment. He closed the door behind him, then followed Jakiyah out of the building.
The cold weather greeted Daniel the second they walked outside. White flurries fell from the sky, and each flake melted when it hit the ground and other surfaces. Snow wasn't in for the forecast. However, the large flurries didn't look to be sticking despite falling hard.
"Do you want me to drive?" Daniel spoke.
"Are you okay to?" Jakiyah asked, holding her keys out to him.
"Probably better if I do," he answered before he took the keys and handed the flowers to her.
"I know you don't like to smoke on today, but if you need it, I'll roll for you."
He shook his head on the way to the driver's side of Jakiyah's grey Honda. "As much as it hurts, this the one day of the year I gotta stay sober."
Today was November 28th, making four years since Daniel's grandmother passed away. It was his father's mother, and she always cared about Daniel more than Clarence ever did. When his mother struggled to take care of Daniel, his grandmother would step in and help wherever she could. His grandmother always meant the world to him because she helped raise him alongside his mother. However, when she got sick around the time Daniel turned sixteen, she couldn't help out as much.
The doctor's told Daniel and his mother that his grandmother had at least five years to live. They were prepared to bury her in five years, yet she died two years after the doctor predicted the five years. Her death came as a complete shock to Daniel and his mother because they were told she had more time. They planned and prepared like they had all that time, only for it to be cut three years short. And after that, Daniel slowly started to spiral.
Today also would've been Daniel's anniversary with Jakiyah if they managed to stay together. When they first started dating-when he was thirteen and she was fourteen-it was on this day nine years ago. Although they didn't make it to a year of their relationship, every year they would celebrate like they made it to another year.
