kakucho's alarm went off at 6:00 the next morning. he rolled over and turned it off in hopes of not waking you, but it had gone off long enough that you were awake.

"you can go back to sleep, y/n." he told you as he got up, but you sat up in his bed and stretched.

"that's okay, i should probably reset my sleep schedule anyway." you said with a yawn. you had been waking up later than usual recently, something koko loved teasing you about.

standing in front of his bedroom mirror, kakucho was already getting dressed in a slim black suit, dreading another long day of investigation.

if he was being honest with himself, he lied to you last night. they didn't have things handled. to their frustration, any lead they found went nowhere, and they barely made any progress from where they started.

maybe he really is dead, the thought crossed his mind, but he knew that would be way too convenient.

"hey. you know you can trust me, right?" you asked, interrupting his thoughts.

his eyes met yours through his mirror, your facial expression guarded.

"i do trust you." kakucho replied, glancing back at himself in the mirror to check the length of his tie.

"then why aren't you telling me what's really going on?"

is she a mind reader or something?

kakucho was so close to telling you at that moment. he didn't have any good answers to your question, and truth be told he knew you could probably help them. he just didn't want you tangled up into the mess they had made.

he opened his mouth to say something, but you had already seen his hesitation and just shook your head.

"nevermind."

without another word, you got out of kakucho's bed and started getting your clothes together. you avoided looking at him, trying to not embarrass yourself further.

"i can tell you soon. please trust me, y/n. please trust us."

you looked up at him carefully, seeing the concern on his face before your shoulders sagged in defeat. it was hard to stay mad at him.

"fine." you conceded.

"thank you. you can call me if you want to have dinner again tonight. we can go to this new restaurant i heard about." he offered.

"okay, i'll let you know." you gave him an appreciative smile.

you were already wearing underwear and a shirt, so you threw the rest of your clothes on to get ready and head back to your place.

"have a good day." you said. you walked over to kakucho and kissing him on the cheek, catching him off guard and making him blush.

he turned to look at you already walking towards the door.

"t-thank you... i hope you do too."

sensing his eyes on you, you looked over your shoulder and shot him a smile.

"thanks. see you later!" you waved him goodbye.

kakucho waved back and smiled after you, staring at the space where you had just been. his thoughts were consumed with how much he really did love seeing you smile, especially when it was directed at him.

when you got back to your apartment, you made yourself breakfast. you were already regretting your decision to not go back to sleep as you were tired, but you tried to push through.
