Some people don't know what they have until it's gone.
But what about the ones who do know?
The ones who never took a damn thing for granted? Who tried their hardest to hold on, yet could only look helplessly...
"Rin, I'm sorry... I really am sorry..." His voice was soft yet firm, laced with an emotion I couldn't name. "I should never have left you with him. In fact, I should never let any other guy out there get close to you. I won't let them near you, especially if they say they like you—no. I won't allow them to like you."
His grip on my hand tightened, his eyes burning with something raw, something fierce. "I will protect you with whatever it takes because I don't want you to go through something that horrible again."
I stared at him, my lips trembling as the tightness in my chest unraveled into something warm—something safe. He meant every word. He always did.
And the strangest thing? It made me happy. So happy that I thought my heart might burst.
I glanced down at our intertwined hands and let out a small, breathy laugh. "If you do that... how am I supposed to get married?"
The thought amused me—until Gon, with that ever-bright, unwavering expression, casually said something that sent my world spinning.
"You can just marry me instead."
My head snapped toward him, my mouth parting in shock. The heat in my cheeks surged so quickly it could've put tomatoes to shame.
'D-Did he just proposes to me?!' My heart, which had barely settled, launched itself straight into the sky.
"H-how can you say that so nonchalantly?! And with a smile on your face?!" I sputtered, my voice rising an octave.
"Idiot! What the hell are you talking about?! Do you even know what you just said?!"
Gon, completely unfazed, simply nodded. "I know."
My breath hitched. "...H-Huh?"
"I mean it."
The sincerity in his voice made my mind go blank.
"Gon..."
"That's because I like you a lot." His gaze never wavered, his voice unwavering. "And if you don't mind... I'll be with you forever."
I had no words—none.
Just a heart that was now completely, utterly his.
-end of flashback-
The memory ended as suddenly as it had come, leaving behind an ache so deep it stole my breath. He had wanted to see my smile. But now, all I could do was cry.
Suddenly, something soft brushed against my lips.
"...!" My brain short-circuited.
Did I just—did someone just—WHAT?!
My heart nearly exploded out of my chest as I whipped my head around, eyes wide with horror. And there he was—Gon, smiling as he casually rubbed his thumbs across my lips like this was totally normal behavior.
