Some people don't know what they have until it's gone.
But what about the ones who do know?
The ones who never took a damn thing for granted? Who tried their hardest to hold on, yet could only look helplessly...
Gon stood in the middle of the chief's grand hut with his arms crossed and brows furrowed in sheer exasperation. He had faced countless challenges before—hunters, creatures, impossible battles—but this? This was a different kind of nightmare altogether.
"Chief," he started, trying to keep his voice steady, "I think there's been a huge misunderstanding."
The village chief, a burly man with graying hair and a smile far too knowing for Gon's liking, stroked his beard and chuckled.
"Misunderstanding? Nonsense, boy! This is a celebration! We are simply honoring the bond you created with our people years ago."
Gon stiffened. "Bond? You mean that time I saved the village from the sea monster?"
"Exactly!" the chief boomed, throwing his arms up as if that explained everything. "And what better way to solidify that bond than through marriage?"
Gon felt his stomach drop. "Wait—what?"
"CHEERS!!!" The room erupted into applause, villagers nodding in approval, clapping each other on the back like this was the best news of the century. Meanwhile, Gon stood there, completely horrified.
Keilani blushed and giggled from the corner of the room. Gon glanced at her and immediately looked away, panic settling in his chest.
"Okay, okay, hold on," Gon said, raising his hands as if trying to calm a wild pack of beasts. "I really appreciate everything but I never agreed to marry anyone!"
Silence fell over the room.
The chief squinted at him. "So... you're not here to claim your bride?"
"No!"
A gasp rippled through the crowd. Someone dropped a plate. The chief's daughter let out a heartbroken gasp.
"But you saved us!" one villager protested.
"You stayed in our village for weeks!" another added.
"You even caught fish with the chief's daughter!" an old woman wailed.
Gon groaned running a hand down his face. "Yeah, because I like fishing! That's not a marriage proposal!"
The chief hummed thoughtfully before his expression grew serious. "There is only one acceptable reason for refusing my daughter's hand, boy."
Gon gulped. "And that is...?"
"If you are already married."
The words struck him like a bolt of lightning. His mind immediately flashed to Rin—Rin, who was probably sulking somewhere, probably thinking he was a two-timing idiot. His face burned at the thought.

The moment of hesitation did not go unnoticed. The chief's eyes gleamed with realization. "Ah! I see now. You already have a wife!"
