Adora
I jolted up from my sleep with a scream, feeling as if the wind had seemingly been knocked out of me. I looked over at my clock. 1:41 A.M.
I let out a heavy sigh, my breathing loud and erratic. I scrambled around for my phone, but froze when I realized I couldn't call Santiago to make sure it was just a dream.
A single tear fell from my eye, but I quickly wiped my cheek. I sniffled and threw the covers off of my legs.
I fell back against my nightstand as soon as I stood and saw Zayn standing in my doorway. I placed my hand on my chest, closing my eyes. "God, you scared me."
"I heard you scream."
"From five apartments away? Was I really that l-"
"No," he said, chucking, "no, I fell asleep on the couch here."
I nodded, pulling the sleeves of my shirt down to cover my freezing hands. I felt more at ease knowing I wasn't that loud. "Oh."
He walked into my room and sat at the end of my bed, bracing his elbows on his thighs. "I've heard if you tell someone about your dream, it doesn't come true."
I turned on my lamp, sitting on the edge of my mattress.
He looked over at me, his sweet eyes meeting mine. "Was it about him?"
I bit down on my lip, subtly nodding. I didn't want to feel more stupid than I already had, knowing that Santiago was the only thing on my mind and I wasn't even on his.
"You know," he said, "it's okay. I'm not expecting you to just brush it off like nothing happened. It's okay to show what you're feeling. Otherwise you'll go crazy."
He stood up and sat next to me, leaning forward.
"I know you felt something for him that you wouldn't dare bring up to anyone else. Not even me."
I shook my head, looking down at my hands in my lap. "I-it's not like it even matters anymore."
"I know you went to talk to him last night."
I squeezed my eyes shut. I didn't want to think of last night.
"And you are so bad at acting like it doesn't bother you."
"You know what bothers me the most?" I asked.
He shook his head, urging me to go on.
"That we didn't have to say it to know."
He chewed on his bottom lip, nodding. "Y-yeah, I could tell."
"And now I have no clue what to believe," I said, raking my hands through my hair, "I want to force myself to let him go, you know, realize that he was terrible for me? But then there's a big part of me that believes that he told me the truth, without a doubt."
His lips pulled into a soft smile. "Well, no matter what Bren says, I don't think you can control who you f-"
"Don't say it."
He chuckled and I smiled a soft smile, leaning against my headboard. "Speaking of Bren, why don't we talk about her?"
He shrugged, a grin tugging at his lips. "What about her?"
