XXXVI. As if he didn't live here

Killua invited me to go along with him back to Greed Island, but I had to give my evaluation to Zeno. The old man wanted to know how good Killua's skills were and I didn't want to stay in his debt for longer than necessary. So, I sighed hoping to meet the rest of his friends someday, they seemed like an interesting group.

Now, how would I find Zeno? I certainly didn't feel like going back to the Zoldyck Manor, but what else could I do? On the way there I prayed to all kinds of gods for luck, and by January 10th, I was in front of the big testing gates of the Zoldyck Manor.

There were tourists taking pictures and walking around so I had to wait and listen to the guide's lacking presentation on the family of assassins. Clearly secrets surrounded the whole family making it a fantastic yet real attraction.

I sighed and as soon as she finished and incited everyone to go inside the bus, I said I'd stay behind taking some more pictures. The young woman stared at me as if that was the weirdest request, I knew... Who'd want to stay behind near the nest of the famous or infamous assassin family? A crazy Y/N, that's who.

I strolled around for a while, watching the bus leave, and even waited 'till it was out of sight. The gatekeeper was looking at me surprised even left his post to come and ask me if I had missed the bus. I beamed him the happiest smile as I cheered. "Nah, I'm good, going to meet the old man. Tell Mike I said hiya~", before furiously pushing the gates and opening 4 or 5 of them. "Last time he nearly killed me! Now that I think of it, entering by the gates is so much better."

I'd say that if the poor man's chin could fall to his feet it would, eyes widened as he saw me skipping through the "safe" path, I could also guess he stayed looking at the gates long before they closed wondering who I was and how did I know so much.

If I remembered the path from last time when Illumi brought me, I'd reach a cute stone wall, not even comparable to the outside, as it was the second test and a little girl with a stick would be there. I saw Mike come closer from the right side slightly hidden by the big forest, "Didn't get a piece of me last time, are you hungry?" I joked as my sight set on the excuse of a wall, and an opening followed by a large tree. The young girl was there, her eyes were clear and a watery colour, her skin a beautiful shade of copper and her clothes gave her a pristine and serious look. I sure liked the uniform the Zoldyck butlers and guards used, I was some meters away and her cold professional gaze landed on me. "Hello, my name is Canary and you shall not pass this -" and with her baton she drew a line in front of her feet "line, or else I'll be forced to use my strength to make sure you don't."

These challenges were quite cute, wonder how many people had fallen at the hands of this girl, misjudging her innocent and thin appearance for weakness. "It's nice to meet you Canary, I'll just try not to hurt you much~", her eyes widened but it was too late, I had conjured an assassin's knife from one of my many books, the wielder could disappear and appear wherever he wanted and I was now, standing behind her, knife on her throat. I knew she wouldn't give up so as she prepared to attack with her baton and throw me out, I rotated the blade so I could hit the back of her neck with the handle. Her coily hair jiggled as she fell on the ground and I could feel Kikyo's eyes on me. "Seriously, Kikyo why not just let me pass, I've been here before~ Are you into testing me?" I said more to myself with a smirk on my face as I dashed to the place she was hiding in, covered by trees.

"Oh, Y/N you have to agree that this is always very fun!" Kikyo stretched a smile on her face, the line on her monitor waving with happiness. I walked along with her to the manor, Kalluto wasn't following Kikyo around, wondered where she could be. Didn't voice that question but answered cordially to the usual questioning.

"How have you been?"

"More relaxed now."

"Have you seen Illumi recently?"

"Thankfully not."

"Been keeping contact with your friends?" A smirk grew on my lovely lips, the Spiders?

"Hard to keep contact when I disappeared out of nowhere, my poor friends must be confused back home."

I thanked Athena when we reached the manor, I'd finally be rid of the passive aggressive Kikyo. The wicked woman had on point questions. "Well, if you don't mind, I was here to chat a bit with Zeno, is he around?"

I could never guess where we were going as the manor was enormous and Kikyo was skilfully leading the way through the corridors. Very maze like, no doubts that it was on purpose. "Oh sweety, he just left for a job. You barely missed him! But Illumi is -"

Before she finished, we entered in a large room, seemed like an office, filled with books, records and a huge expensive writing table- that was messy, papers everywhere, but what made me wish I was dead was the man sitting behind the table. Illumi, wearing some square thin reading glasses and a very casual white shirt, the top buttons were undone, I could see his pale collar bones, and in contrast, his very silky black hair flowing around his body. Could someone forget how to breathe? Because I did, when his hypnotizing onyx eyes met my e/c ones. "Oh... Y/N, mother..."

"Illumi dear, look who's paying a visit? Isn't this great? Anyway, I shall leave you two to catch up~" She squealed happily, "Oh, and Y/N stay as long as you like I'm sure the grandpa won't take long." With that said she leapt out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

"Hahah... this is... huh... " I had to be dumb to not think it would end this way. Walking into this manor as if he didn't live here. Fuck me...
