Chapter 35

We found a two lane highway half covered with sand. On the other side of it there was a collection of houses to small to even be a town.
"Robin" Barbara said "I don't like the look of this there's a huge energy signature coming from one of those houses."
I put my gloves on "Like what kind-"
Boom
I was cut off by an explosion coming from a house. We dove away
"What in Olympus was that" Thalia yelled
"Get out of here" I said to them
"Percy"
"Robin it's-" I heard static on Barbara's end
"Oracle"
Her voice cut in "Al Ghul-" she cut out again "get out-"
Then the line went dead
"Percy" Thalia yelled
"Get out" I said echoing Barbara "guys get out of here"

I woke up to Thalia shaking me.
"Percy we have to keep going" she said
"Ugh" I groaned
We were at the edge of a junk yard when we decided to take a rest and I must've fallen asleep.
"Oh yeah" I said standing I had a bad feeling about something. 'it's just a dream Percy' I thought to myself.
But that's the problem as a demigod a dream was never just a dream.
I got up and put my gloves and earpiece on.
"Oracle" I said "come in"

"Oracle" I said "call as soon as you can please"

I sighed and rolled up my sleeping bag.
"Where to?" I asked
"West" Zoë said "to San Francisco"
"Okay I think we should hurry though I have a bad feeling about-"
A blazing light down the road suddenly fired up. The headlights appeared out of nowhere. We grabbed our sleeping bags and rushed out of the way before the white limo could crush us. It slid to a stop in front of us. The back door opened and before I could step away a sword was put at My throat. I heard the sound of Zoë and Bianca drawing their bows. The owner if the sword got out of the car forcing me to back up.
"Not so fast are you now punk" he growled
He was a big man with a crew cut wearing all black and sunglasses.
"Ares" I growled
The war God glanced at me friends "at ease people"
He snapped his fingers and their weapons fel to the ground.
"This is a friendly meeting, unfortunately" he added "of course I'd like to take your head for a trophy, but someone wants to see you. And I never behead anyone in front of a lady"
"What lady?" Thalia asked
"Well well I heard you were back" he lowered his sword and pushed me away. " You're not with very good company"
"What's your business" she demanded "who's in the car?"
Ares smiled "oh I doubt she wants to meet the rest of you, particularly not them" he nodded his head toward Zoë and Bianca. "Why don't you all get tacos while you wait? It'll only take a few minutes"
"We will not leave him alone with the, Lord Ares" Zoë said
"Besides" Grover bleated "the taco place is closed."
Ares snapped his fingers and the lights in the taco shop flickered on "you were saying goat boy"
"Go on" I said "I'll handle this"
I tried to sound calm in in charge.
"You heard the boy. He's big, he's strong. Don't worry about him"
Reluctantly my friends turned away towards the taco shop.
Ares considered me. "Get in boy, and mind your manners. She's not as forgiving of rudeness as I am"

When I saw her my jaw dropped.
I forgot everything, who I was, where I was, how to speak.
She was wearing a red satin dress. Her hair was curled in ringlets that were cascading down her back.her face was the most beautiful face Id ever seen. Perfect makeup, dazzling eyes, and a smile that could light up the dark side of the moon.
Looking back on it I can't tell you what she looked like. Or even what color her hair or eyes were.
Just picture your favorite actress she was ten times more beautiful than that.
"Ah there you are" she said "I am Aphrodite"
I sat down in the seat in front of her and said something like "um uh gah"
She smiled "aren't you sweet? Hold this please"
She handed me a small gold mirror and I held it for her as she leaned forward fixing invisible flaws in her make-up.
"Do you know why you're here" she asked
I tried to think but couldn't form complete sentences. She was only a seriously beautiful lady with eyes like springs and a smile like...
I pinched myself hard.
"I-i don't know" I stammered
"Oh dear" she said "still in denial?"
Ares chucked from outside the car. The thought of him standing there being able to hear everything made me mad and cleared my head.
"I don't know what your talking about" I said
"Well then, why are you on this quest?"
"Artemis has been captured and-"
"Oh please. Artemis? Talk about a hopeless case. I pity the poor dears who have to imprison Artemis, boring"
"But we have to find the monster-"
"Up, up" she said " a little higher" she moved the mirror higher.
"Oh no more about monsters Percy" she said "why are you on this quest?"
I didn't want to admit it out loud but her eyes pulled the answer from me
"Annabeth is in trouble"
"Exactly" Aphrodite smiled
"I have to help her" I said "I've been having these dreams-"
"Oh you even dream about her" She said "that's so cute"
"No! That's not what I meant"
"Percy, I'm on your side, I'm the reason you're here after all"
"What?" I asked
"The poisoned t-shirt" she said "did you think that was an accident?"
"You did that?"
"Of course. I haven't seen a good I'll fashioned quest for love for forever-"
"Wait I never said-"
"Oh you can put the mirror down" she said "now Percy just concentrate on finding Annabeth, forget about the hunters."
"Do you know where she is?" I asked hopefully
"No, I'll leave the details to you it's been forever since I've seen a tragic love-"
"Who anything about love?" I asked "and why does it have to be tragic?"
"Now you'd better go" she said "and be careful don't take anything my husband is awfully fussy about his trinkets"
"What? You mean Hephaestus?"
The car door opened and I was thrown out of the car by Ares.
And he got in and the car disappeared.

After I told them what happened with Aphrodite Bianca asked
"But what did she want with you?"
"Oh, uh. Not sure she did say to be careful and not take anything in the junkyard."
"Be careful Percy, Aphrodite has led many heroes astray" Zoë said
"For once I agree with Zoë" Thalia said "you can't trust Aphrodite"
"Robin" Oracle connected
"Thank goodness" I muttered grateful to get out of that conversation I stepped away from the group.
"Oracle could you scan the area for any-"
"Found something" she said "a small energy signature is coming from that building. It seems to be man made"
"Is there anyone-"
"Five people, eight at most I can't tell exactly where...." She paused and I heard clicking on the keys "two miles away walking towards you...Percy I don't like the look of this. The banner....Percy it's the league of assassin's."
"Guys you have to go" I said
"Us? don't you mean we" Bianca asked
"I have something I need to take care of" I said "I'll meet you on the other side of the junkyard"
"Percy I don't like this" Thalia said
I hit my hand into my fist, flipped my hood up, and disappeared into the shadows.
"Ugh I hate it when he does that" Thalia said
"Come on Percy is right" Zoë said "we must get to the other side of the junkyard."
They left and Barbara said "Perseus Jackson Wayne what do you think you're doing staying"
"Well they're obviously up to something gee Barb are you worried about me?"
"Yes" she said
"Okay, I'll be careful" I said "now are you gonna help me or not?" I asked
"Ugh" she said "they'll be there in about ten minutes, take cover and survey, no attacking. You figure out what they're up to and get out of there"
"Deal" I said

Ten minutes later I was huddled in the shadows behind the taco shop. I heard the first sounds of them two minutes before I saw them.
"Go scout around" someone ordered loudly indicating they didn't think anyone was here.
Evidently the scouts didn't think so either and did a pretty poor job of scouting.
"No ones here" one of then reported
"Good" the first voice said "Talia you first"
From the shadows I saw Talia Al Ghul enter the building. Something was off about her though....she seemed...
"Oracle is she?"
"Pregnant?" Babs finished my question
"Oh. My. Gods." I said
"Percy follow them" she said as they all disappeared inside the building.
I followed silently. An assassin was left outside to guard but I caught him off guard and knocked him out with one kick to the head.
After disarming him and stashing his sword in my pack for myself I entered the small house.
Nothing seemed weird about it except the other people had disappeared.
"Oracle" I breathed "where'd they-"
Wham
I was hit by a force from behind and turned to see masked assassin.
He threw another punch which I blocked. I tapped my hand calling my bar. I extended it and spun it taking a defensive position.
I blocked his blows flying at me left and right.
I found a gap in his defense and jabbed the electric end of my bar into his stomach. The blow did nothing to him. Catching me by surprise he ripped the bar from my hand and snapped it over his knee. There was no way that would be fixed.
"Gee thanks" I said grabbing a Batarang.
I threw it but it flew passed him.
"Missed" he growled advancing on me with a knife in hand.
"Eh...not quite" I tapped my fingers calling the Batarang back.
He poised over me ready to make the kill.
Thwak
The Batarang hit him on the back of his neck. He teetered before crashing to the ground by me.
"It sure feels good to fight assassins again" I said walking over to this guy.
I pulled off his mask.
"David Cain" Barbara said
"Wait as in Cass's dad?" I asked
"Yeah" Barbara said
"Cassandra" he mumbled
I tied his wrists behind his back and his ankles together.
"Percy he hurt-"
"I know" I said "and if he tries to hurt her again he'll wish he was dead."
I stood and walked around the room looking for any clues as to where they went.
"You'll never find them boy" Cain said
"Are you sure?" I asked pulling him up by his collar.
"You won't get anything out of me" he said
"Uh huh" I said "I thought you were done with the assassin's after Cassandra ran away"
"I was"
"So why are you here?"
"Money" he said "I get payed plenty for an easy gig like this....you could to you know"
"I don't need money" I said
"They have more than money" he said "favors, connections-
"Betrayal, murder" I said
"Lazarus pits" he said
"What?" I asked
"The Lazarus pit" he repeated "ever wonder how your buddy Jason Todd came back?"
"Percy" Barbara said "I know what you're thinking it's not-"
"It could bring back my mom" I said quietly
"Percy if someone comes back in the Lazarus pit they go insane" she said "look at Jason"
"Barbara" I said "what if..."
"Percy" she said "you know it's not right"
"Well boy?" He asked "let me go and we'll see what we can do"
"I...no" I said "I can't"
With that hit David Cain across the head and he crumbled to the ground.
"Percy what made you say no" Barbara asked after a second.
I spotted a hidden lever and pulled it.
"The oath" I said "the oath I made to Bruce."
