Qismat. Destiny. Bade hi ajeeb lafz hein. Samajh hi nahi aate. Pata nahi kab kya se Kya ban jaayein?

Kuch maheeno pehle iss din ke Khwab dekh rahe the hum— USA, studies, Shehryaar. Ab toh aisa lag raha hai yeh pal jitni jaldi ho sake, khatam ho jaayein. Aaj ka din, Yeh pal, ye feelings, sab bohot ajeeb hein. Aisa lag raha hai jaise dil nikal ke bahar—

"Ruksaar!" I snapped out of my thoughts, jumping back, as Raheel bhai placed his hand on my shoulder.

I desperately blinked the tears away from my eyes and turned to smile at him. "Jee?"

"Bell bajao," he told me, bluntly, and pointed at the door.

I briefly glanced at the door and then shook my head at Raheel bhai. "Nahi. Humein lagta hai humein yahaan nahi aana chahiye tha. Hum kisi hotel main kyu nahi ruk sakte? Yah phir seedha New York hi chalte hein."

"Kyun?" Bhai frowned at me like he didn't already know, "Asif uncle ko kitna bura lagega, Ruksaar."

"Bura lagta toh kisi ko humein airport se pick karne bhejte. Ho sakta hai upar upar se invite kar liya ho? What if hum he besharmo ki tarhan mooh utha kar chale aaye hein?"

"Ho sakta hai woh bhool gaye ho?" Bhai defended him and sighed. "Dekho agar Shehryaar ki wajah se yahan se jana chahti ho toh main New York ki tickets change karwa leta hoon par milna toh parega. Kuch ghanto ke liye hi sahi."

"Aapse lakh dafa bol Chuke hein hum!" I raised my voice out of irritation, "mat kara karein unki baatein humaare aage. Aapko samajh kyun—"

"Ruksaar!" I think my heart stopped beating for a moment when I heard my name in his voice after— what felt like— years.

I gulped, forcing a smile, as I turned around. But he looked away instantly!

"Raheel? Ruksaar?" Shehryaar frowned at bhai before widening his eyes, "tum log aaj aane wale the? Oh no! I am so sorry, I totally forgot!"

"It's okay," Raheel bhai widened his smile as he stepped forward to greet Shehryaar, "kaise ho tum?"

"Arrey Bas, fit and fine!" Shehryaar chuckled as he stepped back, "bahar kyun khade ho? Let me open the door for you."

"Excuse me," Shehryaar awkwardly mumbled as he stepped past me to unlock the door. He didn't look up at me. Not even once. As if he was trying to avoid me.

"Tum kaho toh baat karu?" Bhai whispered once Shehryaar disappeared down the lobby.

"Aapko humaari qasam hai! Aapk kisi de kuch nahi kahenge!" I warned bhai, "nahi toh hum yaheen kisi gardi ke aage aa kar apni jaan dedenge!"

"Shut up!" Bhai snapped at me, narrowing his eyes at me, "Yeh kaisi baatein kar rahi ho tum?"

"Yun zaleel hone se toh accha hi hoga! Ek baar phir unse naa sun'ne ka shauk nahi hai humein," I sighed, and gulped the sore lump down my throat.

"Acha theek hai," he said after a few seconds, "I am sorry. Ab pareshan nahi karunga."

Soon Shehryaar appeared again with his mother and aunty welcomed us with tight hugs. She pretended to scold shehryaar for forgetting to pick us up and then introduced us to her daughter, who later gave us a house tour.

"Api kahan hein?" I finally asked. Bhai gave me a warning look but I ignored it.

"Abbu bol rahe the unka phone nahi lag raha. Humein laga woh yahan hongi." I explained.
